Performed several laboratory procedures investigating the role of the gut-brain axis with respect
to the metabolic benefits of bariatric surgery.
• In vitro tasks: RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, PCRs, qPCRs, and immunohistochemistry.
• In vivo tasks: blood and tissue collection from mice, glucose tolerance tests, and MRI body
composition tests.

• Performed Emergency Room simulations, blood testing, urinalysis, and microsurgery.
• Witnessed a live, real-time angioplasty by one of the lecturing physicians.

Microbiomics Research Laboratory Student Assistant MAY 2011 – AUG 2012


Wayne State University​, ​Detroit Michigan
• Selected by Northville High School’s Biology Department Faculty as one of six original
participants in the Northville Public Schools Microbiome Consortium.
• During Summer breaks between my sophomore and Junior years I performed biochemical
analyses of bacterial gene populations. This link provides the abstract for this project:

• I used various tools and methods, e.g. polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) ultraviolet
imagining techniques, and gel electrophoresis, for gene identification in strains of a variety
of infections, and correlated to fungal diseases. I recorded results in computer databases.
• This opportunity, perhaps more than any other, really jump-started my interest in biology
and biology-related fields. I built on this by taking AP Biology, Honors Human Anatomy &
Physiology, and participated in a Summer Biomedical Research Program (see above).
