These youngsters attended Steelpoort Academy’s open day
last week, making ready for their long years in school,
starting 2011. Meanwhile, the matric exams are around
the corner, with a special message form the government’s
youth structures (page 4). Given the public service strikes
and time lost during the Soccer World Cup, it may prove to
be nerve wracking for some. Liuckily the teachers’ unions
decided this week not to resume striking.

Storm wreaks havoc

A storm hit Mokutung village near Echo Caves on Monday
afternoon this week. According to residents little rain fell, but
the wind was ferocious, taking the roofs of several houses with
it. The roof of a church was also taken off by the wind (bottom
photograph), but villagers already reapaired it when Platinum
Gazette visited on Wednesday. The worst hit house was that of
the Masuku family, near the church. The roofs of seven rooms
in the house was blown off and the roof covering plates landed
in the vegetable garden. According to Ms Letta Masuku
(photograph right) two of the eight people living in the house,
are disabled, one is blind and the other cannot walk. By
Wednesday this house was still badly in need of repair. Just as
Platinum Gazette started to leave, a representative of the
Disaster Management section of the Greater Tubatse
Municipality, Mr Elias Boshego (photograph bottom left)
arrived at the scene to assess the damage. It seems that part of
the problem with the house’s roof is that the rafters were
attacked by termites, making it easy for the wind to pull out the
screws holding the roof plates.
As far as could be determined damage to other property in the
village was not that severe.

Bauba Platinum has big plans Tubatse Chrome Festival

Bauba Platinum recently listed on the JSE and has big plans for the futurewe. Bauba Platinum was created
through the reverse listing of a 60% interest in Bauba A Hlabirwa Mining Investments (the Bauba Project). Programme for next weekend
The listing marked a key milestone in the transformation of the company.
Bauba’s immediate business objective is the exploration, evaluation and development of the Bauba Project, a
high quality Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) resource base located on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld
Complex, in the heart of the world’s best-known platinum neighbourhood. The project, which extends over
approximately 12,700 hectares, is strategically located down-dip from Modikwa and Marula platinum mines.
In order to give full effect to the development of the business imperative offered by the Bauba Project, the
company has realigned itself to optimise shareholder value, which included listing on the Main Board of the
JSE, a change in name (to Bauba Platinum Limited) to reflect the core business and a reconstituted Board of
Directors.
An introductory capital raising earlier in the year was completed and the proceeds are funding the initial
exploration drilling programme and scoping study, as well as the working capital.
The exploration programme, which began in April this year, will determine the nature and extent of the PGM
mineralisation.
Initial drill results have exceeded expectations, with the first two boreholes successfully intersecting the
Merensky Reef and confirming the anticipated mineralisation. These results provide a solid base from which
the company can, with confidence,
accelerate the drilling programme
and evaluations.
Bauba CEO, Pine Pienaar is
confident that the platinum market
is poised for growth and investment
over the next five years and expects
Bauba to be well-positioned to take
advantage of such. “I am extremely
happy to be associated with a PGM
project with such potential. I am
confident that with such an
exceptionally experienced team,
Board and management in place we
will successfully manage the Bauba
Project from a brownfield
exploration project to an operating
mine,” said Pienaar.

participation of 40% in the Bauba
Project. Pine Pienaar, Bauba Platinum CEO (right), Kgoshi Victor Thulare

This week, Mr Phakamani Mthembu,

Department of Arts and Culture told
Parliament’s arts and culture portfolio

people together for celebrations of national
days. “People in other countries celebrate

where we were not taught to celebrate

In March this year President Jacob Zuma
asked the department to review the public
holidays. The session with the committee
on Tuesday was part of the feedback on
this review and also included a review of
name changes of towns and cities.
The presidency has expressed concern at
the lack of interest from all race groups
when rallies in celebration of e.g. Freedom
Day are organised.
Mthembu also said that people should
stick to calling the national days what they
officially are and not call Heritage Day

to help with bringing all races to

of an education-related commemoration. It
was also noted that the celebrations should
be brought to the people so that they won’t
have to travel very far to attend the
events.
Another possible change is to include the
leaders of all the political parties at major
rallies. The Department hopes that when
these parties’ leaders share the podium
with the president at major rallies, a
broader base of support will be mustered.
