INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF MCB BANK LTD:

MCB bank was incorporated under company’s act 1913 on 9th July, 1947 (just before partition)
at Calcutta. But due to changing scenario of the region, the certificate of incorporation was
issued on 17th August, 1948 with a delay of almost 1 year; the certificate was issued at
Chittagong. The first Head office of the company was established at Dhaka and Mr.G.M.

Adamjee was appointed its first chairman. It was incorporated with an authorized capital of Rs.
15 million. This institute was nationalized with other on January 1st, 1974. At that time it had
506 branches and deposits amounting to Rs. 1,640 million. Although MCB has a reputation of a
conservative bank but nationalization also left its effects on this institute as well and by end of
year 1991 in which it was privatized the total number of branches were 1287 and deposits
amounting to as high as Rs. 35,029 million.

When privatization policy was announced in 1990, MCB was the first to be privatized upon
recommendations of World Bank and IMF. The reason for this choice was the better
profitability condition of the organization and less risky credit portfolio which made it a good
choice for investors. On April 8th, 1991, the management control was handed over to National
Group (the highest bidders). Initially only 26% of shares were sold to private sector at Rs. 56 per
share. After privatization, the growth in every department of the bank has been observed.

OTHER DEPARTMENTS OF MCB HAMDARD CHOWK BRANCH (1551):

The other departments of MCB are as under:

 Accounts Department
 Deposit Department
 Clearing Department
 Remittance Department

Accounts Department:
Now after the types of accounts there comes that how these accounts will
be opened and for this there is a need for account opening form.

Firstly the customer fills the account opening form and provides all the information which is
needed. I learn how to fill this form.

INTRODUCTION

An account is needed to be introduced. The introduction of a current account holder is

accepted for the opening of an account. The introducer should be a branch customer or may be
account holder of any branch of MCB; however signatures should be verified by the banker. In
certain cases, introduction from bank other than bank MCB may be allowed. Personally known
accounts may be introduced by the bank staff. Introduction from an account holder not
personally coming to the bank should be verified by the bank.

FILLING THE FORM

After complete verification from the customer, the account opening form is filled. Along with
the form a specimen signature card and a cheque book requisition slip, change in signature
difference from CNIC and Mother’s or father’s indemnity form is also supplied to customer and
signature are taken on all these forms and slips where required. And customer KYC is also filled
and attached with the form. Manager has every right not to accept this contract if he is not
satisfied by the details provided by the customer. In case the contract is acceptable to both,
now it is ready to open the account formally.

After filling the form it is then stamped. Stamps like, BAL Sign verified, Sign Admitted Stamp etc
are affixed .And the stamp of original seen is affixed on the photocopy of CNIC of the customer
and the stamp of MCB logo is affixed on the request application of the customer which he gave
for account opening. And if the customer can’t do his signature and open account with thumb
impression then an additional stamp (All Drawing in Person) is also affixed on the picture of the

16
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

customer. When all the procedures are completed than the form is given to Operation
Manager for his signature and final approval is taken from the Branch Manager.

SEND FORM TO HEAD OFFICE

After fulfilling all the requirements and verifying the forms from Operation Manager and
Branch Manager the account opening form is sent to Head Office and make request to issue the
printed cheque book.

LETTER OF THANKS

Subsequent to the opening of an account, letter of thanks should be sent under registered post
or courier service to the customer.

ISSUANCE OF A CHEQUE BOOK

After opening an account with the bank, the account holder cannot immediately start operating
his/ her account. The Cheque book is issued, when a customer will submit some amount of
deposit in his account. Normally a Cheque book having at least 25 leaves is for PLS Saving
Account and Cheque book having 50 leaves is for Current Account.

There are number of reasons of closing an account and that can be one of the

 If customer desire to close his account.

• In case of death of account holder.

• Bankruptcy of the account holder and

• If an account contain nil balance or not up to the requirement of rules.

Before closing any account, bank send letter to the account hold for informing him that his
account is going to be closed. There is need an approval form higher authority to close any
account.

Apart from filling the account opening form and KYC (Know Your Customer) the other works

account and which things(documents) are needed for opening a current and saving account

INWARD CLEARING

In Inward clearing instruments received from NIFT are posted in Computers.

18
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

OUTWARD CLEARING

In outward clearing when cheque is received two copies of voucher are prepared, one copy and
instruments along with clearing stamp, realization stamp, add list and two vouchers of clearing
summary are sent to NIFT in a sealed bag. And clearing records are recorded in clearing
register.

CLEARING HOUSE:

It is a place where Cheques are presented, collected from bank branch. It is one of the services
provided by NIFT to other commercial banks. NIFT acts as a clearing house. NIFT stands for
National Institutional Facilitation Technologies. Clearing House of SBP has shifted a tiresome
part of its work to a private institution named NIFT. NIFT collects cheques, demand drafts, Pay
orders, Travelers Cheques, etc. from all the branches of different banks within city through its
carriers and send them to the branches on which these are drawn for clearing. After the
branches approve the instruments drawn on them, NIFT prepares a sheet for each branch
showing the number for instruments and amount in its favor and drawn on it and sends it to
each branch. A similar sheet for each bank is also sent to clearing house of SBP where accounts
of banks are settled in the same manner.

CLEARING PROCEDURE :

Instruments collected are treated as Transfer, Transfer Delivery, Clearing, and Cheque
collection.

Checking Of Cheques

When the instruments are collected from the client. Following things are checked:

• Title

• Cheque date

• Instrument should be neither stale/ nor post-dated.

• Amount in figures and words should be the same.

• There should be no cutting and overwriting on the cheque.

• Instrument should not bear any unauthorized alternation.

• Cheque is crossed.

19
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

TRASNSFER

When the instruments are collected and paid by the same branch, it is called transfer.

TRANSFER DELIVERY

When instruments are collected and paid by two different branches of the same bank situated
in the same city, it is called transfer delivery. A Cheque is processed under transfer delivery
when it has crossing stamp and is from local branch of MCB.

REMITTANCE :
Transfer of money or equivalent to money from one branch to another branch of the same
bank is called remittance. Now it has become easier and safer method both for the client and
banker to transfer their money from one branch to another within the city and outside the city
through the instruments.

REMITTANCE DEPARTMENT :

Types Of Remittance

 Inward Remittance
 Outward Remittance
 Inland Remittance
 Foreign Remittance

Inward Remittance:

The way a branch receives the instrument directly from the customer or from the originating
branch, and is responsible to pay the instrument is called inward remittance.

Outward Remittance:

The way in which a branch issues or sales the instrument to the responding branch is called
outward remittance.

20
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

Inland Remittance:

Transfer of money from one branch to another branch of the same bank within the same
country is called inland remittance. In this case both originating branch and responding branch
will be situated in the same country.

Foreign Remittance:

Transfer of money from one country to another country is called foreign remittance. In such
case originating or responding branch will be out of the country, and mostly conversation of
foreign currency is involved.

CASH PAYMENT DEPARTMENT:

In this cash payment department different types of payments are made by GBO.

Mode of Payment:
MCB uses following ways to transfer money:

o Demand Draft (DD)

o Pay order (PO)
o Mail Transfer (MT)
o Pay slip
o Call deposit slip
o Letter of credit
o Traveler’s cheque

When customer requires a facility of remittance, he should be asked to complete the

prescribed application form. Same prescribed application form is used for MT, TT, DD, and PO.
This application form states the amount of the remittance, the name and address of the payee,
the name of originating and responding branch. The applicant and the bank officer who have
been duly authorized to act on his behalf should sign this application form.

21
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

Demand Draft (DD):

A draft is an instrument drawn by a bank in favor of any person on a branch of its own bank or
any other bank to pay a certain amount of money, which is demanded, to the person named on
it. It is not necessary for the demand draft that the applicant or recipient’s account should be
open in originating and responding branches. For demand draft, bank charges excise duty and
commission which is bank’s income. It is one of the cheapest methods to transfer money within
the country or outside the country.

Procedure For Demand Draft:

Applicant has to fill in the application form SF 100 (Revised) for availing the facility of DD. After
depositing the amount of draft, remittance officer prepares the leaf of demand draft. Contra
entry will be done on the two sides of cheque leaf; on the cheque there will be authorized
signature and posted stamp of the bank. One copy of confirmation advice will be dispatched
with the cheque and the other copy will be sent to the responding branch by the originating
branch for the confirmation of draft. When banker issues the draft to the customer, he also
records customer particulars in a demand draft register where record is maintain branch wise.
Responding branch and originating branch debit/credit the head office account and send the
daily statement of transaction to head office.

Pay Order (PO):

Pay order is also called as “Banker’s Cheque”. Pay order is written order, which is issued and
received by the same bank or drawn and payable on same branch. In this case originating and
responding branches will be same. For PO it is not necessary that applicant should be account
holder. It is used for local transference of money from one person to another .

Advantages Of Internship At MCB Hamdard Chowk

Branch:
 The most important advantage of doing internship in MCB Hamdard Chowk Branch is
that BM & BOM had special focus on internees as they are interested in Morality rather
than performing clerical work. In other words, they do not keep internees just for the
purpose of doing their clerical chores but are interested in training them.
 The staff is fully supportive and encourages the internees so they can learn as much as
possible and can be prepared for their future endeavors.
 Good management control.
 Hard working, skilled and dedicated staff.
 Bank reputation.

22
INTERNSHIP REPORT ON MCB

DISADVANTAGES:

 Since it is the most reputed bank but it does not provide any stipend to internees.
 There are two internees present at the same time, due to which any one of them had
to sit idle most of the time.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

During my internship in MCB I learn to work in Clearing, Remittance, Account Opening and
Customer Service Office department and I successfully completed all the tasks and duties that
were assigned to me.

RECOMMENDATIONS OR SUGGESTIONS:

The following suggestions can be recommended to overcome flaws in MCB and to improve
the efficiency for the development of the bank.

Employees Training Programs must be introduced on continuous basis so

that the employees will have understanding with the latest developments
especially with the customers.
Bank should introduce incentive plans for employees on regular basis so
that employees will work whole-heartedly for the welfare of their
organization.
Incentives should be given on the basis of qualification, hard work, and
experience etc.
Mismanagement of resources must be avoided as much as possible as it
decreases profit.
MCB is going towards mobile banking but the problem is that a common
client has no idea of its usage due to lack of marketing. So, a proper
marketing program must be launched for client’s awareness.
Bank should help the society by providing interest free loans to the
Talented Students.
