PART 1 GENERAL
A. See interior design drawings and schedules for interior design painting.
D. Painting exposed bare and covered pipes and ducts (including color
coding), hangers, exposed steel and iron work, and primed metal surface
of mechanical and electrical equipment.
K. Surface preparation, priming, and finish coats specified in this section are
in addition to shop priming and surface treatment specified under other
sections.
1.03 REFERENCES
1.04 DEFINITIONS
P. Paint exposed surfaces whether or not colors are designated in "schedules", except
where a surface or material is specifically indicated not to be painted or is to remain
natural. Where an item or surface is not specifically mentioned, paint the same as
similar adjacent materials or surfaces. If color or finish is not designated, the
Engineer will select from standard colors or finishes available.
Q. "Paint or Painting", as used herein, shall include various coating systems and materials
such as primers, emulsions, enamels, stains, sealers and fillers, and other applied
materials whether used as prime, intermediate or finish coats.
1.05 SUBMITTALS
C. Samples: Submit two samples, 300x300 mm in size illustrating selected colors and
textures for each color selected.
F. Color Samples: Submit two (2) labeled 300 mm square samples for each color and
texture to simulate actual conditions. Show various stages of finish on displays.
A. General Painting
1. Paint exposed surfaces, except where the paint schedules indicate that a surface
or material is not to be painted or is to remain natural. If the paint schedules
do not specifically mention an item or a surface, paint the item or surface
the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces whether or not schedules
indicate colors. If the schedules do not indicate color or finish, the Architect
will select from standard colors and finishes available.
2. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating
parts, and labels.
1.06 QUALIFICATIONS
A. Conform to applicable code for flame and smoke rating requirements for
finishes.
B. Deliver paint materials to the job site in original containers and packages,
C. Label each container with color, type, texture, room locations, in addition
to the manufacturer's label.

FOR PAINTING
4. Flat Acrylic Finish for Gypsum Board or Plaster: 2 finish coats over
a primer consisting of first and second coats of flat, acrylic-latex-
based, interior paint applied at spreading rate recommended by the
manufacturer to achieve a total dry film thickness of not less than
0.064 mm.

A. Paint Colors: Earth tones (white, beige, buff, tan and brown) as selected
by Engineer.
PART 3 - EXECUTIONS
3.01 EXAMINATION
3.02 PREPARATION
B. Correct defects and clean surfaces which affect work of this section.
Remove existing coatings that exhibit loose surface defects.
C. Seal with shellac and seal marks which may bleed through surface
finishes.
G. Insulated Coverings: Remove dirt, grease, and oil from canvas and
cotton.
H. Concrete Floors: Remove contamination, acid etch, and rinse floors with
clear water. Verify required acid-alkali balance is achieved. Allow to
dry.
K. Gypsum Board Surfaces: Fill minor defects with filler compound. Spot
prime defects after repair.
L. Plaster Surfaces: Fill hairline cracks, small holes, and imperfections with
latex patching plaster. Make smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces.
Wash and neutralize high alkali surfaces.
N. Uncoated Steel and Iron Surfaces: Remove grease, mill scale, weld
splatter, dirt, and rust. Where heavy coatings of scale are evident,
remove by hand power tool wire brushing or sandblasting; clean by
washing with solvent. Apply a treatment of phosphoric acid solution,
ensuring weld joints, bolts, and nuts are similarly cleaned. Spot prime
paint after repairs.
O. Shop Primed Steel Surfaces: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer
and rust. Feather edges to make touch-up patches inconspicuous. Clean
surfaces with solvent. Prime bare steel surfaces. Prime metal items
including shop primed items.
P. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Wipe off dust
and grit prior to priming. Seal knots, pitch streaks, and sappy sections
with sealer. Fill nail holes and cracks after primer has dried; sand
between coats.
T. Wood and Metal Doors Scheduled for Painting: Seal top and bottom
edges with primer.
3.03 APPLICATION
D. Apply each coat of paint slightly darker than preceding coat unless
otherwise approved.
E. Sand wood and metal lightly between coats to achieve required finish.
F. Vacuum clean surfaces free of loose particles. Use tack cloth just prior to
applying next coat.
H. Where clear finishes are required, tint fillers to match wood. Work fillers
into the grain before set. Wipe excess from surface.
D. Prime and paint insulated and exposed pipes, conduit, boxes, insulated
and exposed ducts, hangers, brackets, collars and supports, except where
items are prefinished.
E. Paint interior surfaces of air ducts that are visible through grilles and
louvers with one coat of flat black paint, to visible surfaces. Paint
dampers exposed behind louvers and grilles to match face panels.
G. Paint both sides and edges of plywood backboards for electrical and
telephone equipment before installing equipment.
3.06 CLEANING
B. Collect waste material which may constitute a fire hazard, place in closed
metal containers and remove daily from site.
c. Two topcoats are required for each paint system unless otherwise
indicated.
7. Finish 7: To be determined.
G. Exterior Painting
2. Items and surfaces to be painted: Unless excluded under the items and
Surfaces Not To Be Painted paragraph, paint the following new
materials and items as follows:
a. Give new surfaces and items one coat of primer and two coats of
topcoat, using appropriate paint system for substrate involved and
using topcoat of type scheduled.
b. Where field applied prime coats are scheduled, they may be omitted
for shop primed items. Touch up damaged areas with scheduled
primers.
