PERSONAL EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

(REACTION PAPER)

During my On-the-Job training at REND Enterprises & General Contractor owned by Mr.
Ernesto R. Lim Jr. I was assigned by Engr. Willie (Project Manager) at the on-going Batangas
projects I was afraid at the same time excited because I will be my on first actual training and
during that time I’ve learned a lot from my experience that I may able to furnish my technical
skills on my chosen field of specialty. First, I’ve learned how to properly handle the project’s
budget for a whole week, then also on how to properly deal with the workers on the site. Dealing
with the workers on site will really set the tone for the project, you should know the needs of the
people around and properly deal with them, with this it will result a very good outcome of the
current project.

Also, I’ve learned the different aspects that may cause the project to delay, like on the
delivery of materials, bad weather, supply of water, malfunctioning of equipment’s, unable to
deliver concrete cement mix from the batching plant because of tight schedule, and different
public concerns about the project, eventually the we are finding ways to fix these things that will
cause us the delay of project and cost us money as well.

I’ve also learned the standard techniques, different materials and testing in constructing
PCCP (Portland Cement Concrete Pavement). PCCP has the aggregate base course, Class A
Portland cement, S1 sand, 16 mm diameter plain round bars (Tie bars and Dowels). According to
specified plan from the DPWH the designated thickness of the PCCP is 20 cm, it has a width of 4
meters (2 meters each lane), and in every 4.5 meters the PCCP should be cut and filled by
asphalt known as “joint fillet” it has minimum depth of 50 mm, it is done to prevent seismic
cracks and according to DPWH Bluebook that in every 4 to 4.5 meters of the PPCP is called
“critical section of the pavement”.

The company personnel involved in the training is willing to teach everything they know
especially Engr. Willie, Engr. Kim and Engr. Gab, these people are always willing to share their
knowledge about the aspects of construction specifications every time I am asking question to
them. They treat me not as a trainee but a regular member of the company, they made me
comfortable on the company during my training, they are willing to answer all my questions and
answer more than what I expect. And all the company personnel value safety, in everything they
do they also putting Safety first.

Therefore, I can conclude that I’ve been given enough time during my training in this
company that I’ve learned a lot of things that I could apply for my future in my chosen field of
specialty. I would to thank REND Enterprises & General Contractor for giving me the
opportunity and chance to experience and learn the actual activities of this profession.

RECOMMENDATIONS

A. Potential of the Company as a Training ground

 Availability and appropriateness of facilities, equipment and machinery
During my training on this company I can say that this company’s is
appropriate and a potential perfect training ground, because you will be starting
from the very small detail and procedure during your working period, you will be
undergoing from the supervision of the Site engineer until you have enough
knowledge about the work. Sometimes, the office is too busy due to the
preparation of the projects, and therefore we the trainees needed to more initiative
about our training and on what can help to them.

 Company personnel cooperation

All the personnel in the engineering office as well as in the finance office,
has a warm treatment to us, as what I’ve said earlier they are willing to share to us
their knowledge about the current projects. They also give us references to help us
grow on the field of our chosen profession.

B. Duration of Training
During my stay in this company I can say that I’ve been given enough time during
my training and that I’ve learned a lot of things that I could apply for my future in my
chosen field of specialty. Therefore, the duration of the training is not too long or too
short, for me it was just exact because we finished before the review for the November
board exam started.

C. Suggestions for the Improvement of the Training Program

Add more training time for some of the trainees, and keep on making programs
that can help the student be familiar on the working site, like site inspection and more
actual work activities, that can shape their knowledge not just being a trainee but also as
renowned professional.

D. Advise to Future On-the-Job Trainees

My advice for the future On-the-Job trainees that they should be the one’s
initiating the training, which they should be the asking questions on how and what are the
things needed to a specific situation, and also to obey always the assigned personnel to
you and don’t think that you’re engineering students and they are only technical graduate,
think that you’re a trainee and you want to learn a lot from them, and everything you do,
do your best not only to pass the subject but to learn and gain knowledge from the
experience during the training period.
