1.0 INTRODUCTION
The course TAI5563 Fashion Design Development is a Level 5 course offered in the specialization of
Fashion Design and Product Development steam of the Bachelor of Industrial Studies programme,
offered by the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
This project is of one year duration and carries five credits of course work. This means students are
expected to spend about 250 Notional Learning Hours to complete this course.
Students get freedom to select one area from part A and B given below to complete their course
works as,
Part A: Textile design development
Part B: Fashion accessory design development

3.0 OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of the project you should be able to;
• analyze any fashion requirements you are confronted with
• find favourable solutions to the fashion requirements by employing different decision
making options,
• plan, organize and control functions to achieve better and effective outcomes to meet the
fashion requirement,
• decide on the manufacturing techniques that would make it practically feasible to develop
the textile, garment and accessory designed to meet the fashion requirement

A project selected by a student must contain scope for a substantial amount of theoretical study to
develop a practically feasible design concept. If the student is unable to find a suitable topic for the
project work on his or her own, the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology would assign
him/her relevant topics that are related to his/her area of interest.
Proposal presentation
Student need to select Part A or B in this project according to their preference and present the ideas
using a standard computer presentation package, such as MS PowerPoint. The staff would give
their feedback based on presentation which would enable the student to carry out his work in the
correct direction. The dress code of the presenters should be smart casual.
Progress presentations
Flowchart given below show the basic steps you should follow to progress with you course work.

Part A
The student should identify a design project work related to textile design development. Final
outcome of the project may be a fabric, tapestry, wall hanging, etc. The product has to be specified
as belonging to one area of textile designing such as weaving, knitting, or any other manufacturing
method with a colouration technique such as printing, dyeing, etc.
Students have to present their topic area, expected specialized areas in textile design, time plan, and
examples or initial sketches to explain the final expected outcome.

After the concept presentation the Department will assign two supervisors to guide the student
with the course work on design and product development related to the specialized areas.
Part B
The student should identify a design project work related to a garment or accessory design
development. The final outcome of the project may be a garment, jewelry, head wear, foot wear,
hand bag, etc. The students should specify one area with the expected outcome of the project.
Students have to present their topic area, expected specialized areas in textile design, time plan, and
examples or initial sketches to explain the final expected outcome.
After the concept presentation the Department will assign two supervisors to guide the student
with the course work on design and product development related to the specialized areas.
In the first instance the students are requested to submit the final draft report to their supervisors
in a ‘draft’ format in given date in activity diary, for his or her comments and input. Final report
needs to be submitted with the suggested corrections of the errors, recommended changes,
modifications or improvements. The report should be prepared in conformity with the guidelines
given in the document titled Guidelines for the Submission of the Final Design Project Report.
The Final project report must show evidence of the candidate’s proficiency in report writing skills,
good presentation skills, Project introduction, design development skills, product development
skills, adequate knowledge and discussion of the literature in specific study areas. Sketchers of
concept development, product strategy report including Marketing information, customer details,
market segmentation and costing, sketchers of design developments, mood boards/ story boards,
colour palets, fabric or material boards are need to present for Related to concept and design
development. Final design with technical specifications and methods of constructions are needed to
present related to the product development stage.
Students are requested to follow the document “Guidance for the submission of final report
writing” given by Department of Textile and Apparel Technology to complete the final report
writing. Please consider main areas given below to complete the body of the report.

6.0 SUPERVISION
Academics from Department of Textile and Apparel Technology will be appointed by the
supervisors to conduct the project works. The supervisor is responsible for monitoring the progress
of the project on behalf of the University. S/he is also responsible for guiding and advising students
in the pursuit of their project. Students are strongly urged to maintain a close contact with their
supervisors pertaining to the project undertaken.
8.0 EVALUATION
The overall assessment of a project consists of two components. Each component will be assessed
through presentations, assessing the project diary and the final practical outcome of the project
work.
The presentations will be assessed by the academics and invitees of the Faculty. Students must
maintain a Progress Diary, wherein the supervisor would write his/her comments on the work the
student must carry out regularly. It is compulsory that the student meets the supervisor as often as
possible. If the progress of the student is not satisfactory s/he may not obtain the necessary marks
for the continuous assessment. The students who have successfully completed the continuous
assessment are eligible to present final Project Report and the viva-voce.
The assessment of a student registered for a Project shall be based on a project report submitted
(Final Report Submission) by her/him.
Minimum of two examiners for the assessment of the project report and the oral examination shall
be appointed, by the Senate on the recommendation of the Department and Faculty of Engineering
Technology.
10
Fashion Design and Product Development – Guidelines for TAI5563
The overall assessment mark (Z) of a student shall be based on the mark obtained in the continuous
assessment and at the final examination.
Each student who sits the final examination will be awarded a grade dependent on the Overall
Assessment Mark as follows:
85 Z : A+
75 Z 85 :A
70 Z 75 : A-
63 Z 70 : B+
55 Z 63 :B
50 Z 55 : B-
45 Z 50 : C+
40 Z 45 :C
35 Z 40 : C-
30 Z 35 : D+
20 Z 30 :D
Z 20 :E
A student who is awarded a C-, D+, D and E grades cannot count that course towards her/his
credit requirements unless s/he re-sits the Final Examination on a subsequent occasion and obtains
a C grade.
Study: Study is conducted related to Mobile designs of several designers throughout the history.
Design concepts, appearance of designs, locations to place the mobile, methods, materials
and preparation steps are studied.

Fashion Design and Product Development – Guidelines for TAI5563
Prepare a site visit to “Punchi Theatre”, Borella. Discuss the requirement and ideas on mobile
design from the owner’s point of view. Get their feedback through a questionnaire.
Design Development: Select an inspiration considering the customer requirement, conducted study
and the designer’s point of view. Analyse the selected inspiration. Do sketches and select the
final design. Develop more designs considering different perspectives. Do a set of clear
drawing on final design showing the front, back and side view.
Product Development: Do set of technical drawings to show the front, back and side view of the
design. Prepare the operation breakdown and specification sheets considering each and
every preparation step. Select materials and accessories to prepare the design product.
