Cable Design User Guide
Introduction

1 Introduction

The Cabling System application is supplied as a module within the AVEVA PDMS suite and
allows the user to create and route cables, and if required enclose the routed cables within
cable trays.
The application can be divided broadly into three parts, namely, Cableways, Cables and
Cable Tray Material. The design process is as follows:
• Cableways are created early in the 3D modelling process to reserve space in the model
for the cables and cable trays.
• Cables are selected from the catalogue, optionally connected to equipment, before
being joined to a cableway and routed along a cableway.
Cable tray material is added to the cableways either automatically or manually. There is also
an option to perform preliminary dressing of a cableway.

1.1 Assumptions
The Cable Design User Guide has been written for users familiar with cabling design
practices, who may or may not have prior knowledge of PDMS.
It is assumed that:
• Users have a valid PDMS licence and the software has been installed
• Users know how to launch the DESIGN module
• The user is familiar with the basic Graphical User Interface (GUI) features as described
in the AVEVA document Getting Started with Plant.

1.2 Guide Structure

The Cable Design User Guide is divided into the following sections:

Cabling System describes the main features and application defaults.

Cabling System Toolbar describes the Cabling System toolbar.

Cableway describes how to create a cableway element.

Cableway Branch describes how to create a cableway branch element.

Cable Tray Design describes how to create a cable tray element.

Cable describes how to create a cable element.

2 Cabling System

The Cabling System application allows the users to create cableways, cables and cableway
material (trays/ladders). If required the cables can also be routed through the cableways.
The application is divided into three main areas, Cableways, Cables and Cableway material.
The cabling design process

2.1 Design Features

Cableways are created early in the design process to reverse space for the cables and
cableway material. Cables are selected from the catalogue and optionally connected to
equipment element. Alternatively, the cables and connecting equipment could come from
the Cable diagrams. Cableway material is also selected from a catalogue and added to the
cableways either automatically or manually.

2.2 Hierarchy
All database elements are owned by other elements, therefore elements must be created in
a strict order. The following database elements are common to all DESIGN disciplines:
• World
• Site
• Zone
For more information on the generic hierarchical structure and the PDMS design database,
refer to Getting Started with Plant.

2.2.1 Cabling System Specific Hierarchy

Below the zone level in the Cabling System application, the cabling system specific
elements are:

Cableway (Cway)
• Cway elements are administrative and can own a number of cableway branches with
common default cabling application defaults and can have any number of ends.

Cableway Branch (Cwbran)

• Cwbran elements define a section of the cableway (space for the cables and cableway
material (CTMTRL) element(s)) with a known head and tail.

Cableway Material (Ctmtrl)

• Ctmtrl elements defines the type of cable tray material used and own a section of the
cableway (made up from cableway material components).

Cabling System

Cableway Material Component

• Cableway material components are owned by the cableway material elements. These
components are available in the catalogue and dictate the shape and geometry of the
cableway. Cableway material components can run from the head to tail of the owning
branch but can also be connected to other branches.

Cable
• Cable elements are administrative and can own a number of cableway branches with a
common default cabling application default. Cables can be routed with or without
cableways with a know head and tail but can also be connected to other branches.

2.3 Cabling Application Defaults

All the cabling specifications available in the catalogue are shown in the Cabling
Application Defaults window and therefore all the cabling element available to the user
from the catalogue are determined by the currently selected cabling specification.
To avoid having to specify the specification again for each cable element, the default cabling
specification can be set at Cableway or Cableway Branch level. The selected specification
will be used automatically at lower levels unless it is changed (the default cabling
specification is said to be cascaded down the hierarchy).
The Cabling Application Defaults window is automatically displayed when the Cabling
System application is first entered but can be displayed at any time by selecting Settings >
Cabling Defaults from the main menu bar.

Cabling System

The Storage Areas part of the Cabling Application Defaults window is used to define the
location of the CableWay and Cable elements in the Design database hierarchy. The user
can choose a location from the drop-down menu. If a location is not listed, refer to the
System Administrator.

Note: The list of available storage areas are only populated with zones where the purpose
is set to CABL.

The Cable Data part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the Excess
Lengths and Proximity Distance associated with the specification.

Select the Fill Check check box to automatically check the fill level.
The Specifications part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the basic
details of the specification.
The Cableway Data part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the
dimensions of the cableway. Create Ends RNODEs allows the user to create RNODEs on
the ends of the cableway branch.
Fill Check Utility Allowance is the value taken into account when the Fill Level Check
window updates the Branch Points grid cells with a specific colour, green, yellow or red. If a
Cableway Branch maximum fill is 75% and the Fill Check Utility Allowance is set to 5, the
user will be prompted when a specific point on the branch is within 5 of the maximum fill
percentage
The value for this must be greater than 1, if it is not a message is displayed.

Auto Routing Criteria has two options. Selecting Minimise Free Route will route the cable
to or from the closest valid entry or exit point, finding the shortest path through the cableway
branches. Selecting Minimise Total Length will find the shortest possible route between
the start and end points, using any of the valid entry or exit points within the RANEQUIP
range to minimise the length.

Note: The closest points will not always be used.

4 Cableway

A cableway element is used to reserve a volume in space through which cables can be run
and the cableway material placed.
Referring to the Cabling Hierarchy, the first task that the user must perform is to create a
cableway element in the Design Database.
Before creating a cableway element the correct database elements should already be
present in the Design Explorer, i.e. a World, Site and Zone should exist. If this is not the
case, refer to Getting Started with Plant for a detailed explanation of creating these standard
elements.

4.1 Create CableWay

To create a CableWay element, select Create Cableway from the Cabling System toolbar to
display the CableWay Create Tasks window:

Cableway Branch

5 Cableway Branch

A CableWay Branch is the starting point from which all other Cabling System elements are
added. The task of creating a CableWay Branch is initiated from the CableWay Create Task
window.
Referring to Cabling System Specific Hierarchy, the user must create a Cableway Branch
below an existing CableWay element. For a detailed explanation of how to create a

6.3 Cable Tray Material Elements

Cable Tray Material elements are single pieces of material suitable for use with cable trays.
It is usual for the user to build up the cabling design by adding material elements
sequentially, starting at any point and positioning and orientating each material element as
they proceed.
Depending on the element selected from the Select Element part of the window, will dictate
which window is displayed. For example the selection of the Reducer element results in the
Create Reducer window being displayed. User input will vary depending upon the material
element selected. The window for the Straight element is displayed as the default. All the
tasks that a user would carry out with creation or modification of cable tray material
elements are initiated from the create element window.
The Cable Design User Guide only includes a description for the default (Create Straight).
The information can be applied to the same processes that are used to create all other types
of cable tray material elements.

Create Cable Tray Material Element

All Create material elements window, are dual purpose windows allowing the user to create
a new cable tray material element (by default) or Modify the attributes of an existing cable
tray material element.
Referring to the Cabling hierarchy, a cable tray material element must reside below an
existing cable tray material main element (CTMRL). For a detailed explanation of creating
an cable tray material element, refer to Cable Tray Material Elements.

6.5 Cabletray Volume

The Cable Tray Volumes window allows the user to select an existing cabletray and create
volumes with dimensions extracted from the tray members. Additionally, the user can also
select the zone where they would like to create new elements. The user can also set some
cableway branch attributes.
The software first checks for any changes in tray width and change in direction on a TEE or
a CROSS, as this will require a new cableway branch to be created. For each cabletray a
new CWAY (Cableway) and CWBRAN (Cableway Branch) elements are created under
CWAY. The populated list is then passed onto a method where for each change in direction
(BEND/ELBOW) on the cabletray a new POINTR is added to the RPATH of the cableway
branch. For each CROSS or TEE on a cabletray a new RATTA is created under the
CONSEQ element of the cableway branch. If a TEE or a CROSS has a leave point at an
angle (i.e. '3') then it automatically creates a new branch. The VWidth of the new Cableway
Branch is extracted from the ABORE attribute of the first element of the segregated list.
Select Utilities > Cable Trays Volumes to display the Cable Tray Volumes window with
the Cable Tray List tab displayed as default.
