1 Introduction
The Cabling System application is supplied as a module within the AVEVA PDMS suite and
allows the user to create and route cables, and if required enclose the routed cables within
cable trays.
The application can be divided broadly into three parts, namely, Cableways, Cables and
Cable Tray Material. The design process is as follows:
• Cableways are created early in the 3D modelling process to reserve space in the model
for the cables and cable trays.
• Cables are selected from the catalogue, optionally connected to equipment, before
being joined to a cableway and routed along a cableway.
Cable tray material is added to the cableways either automatically or manually. There is also
an option to perform preliminary dressing of a cableway.
1.1 Assumptions
The Cable Design User Guide has been written for users familiar with cabling design
practices, who may or may not have prior knowledge of PDMS.
It is assumed that:
• Users have a valid PDMS licence and the software has been installed
• Users know how to launch the DESIGN module
• The user is familiar with the basic Graphical User Interface (GUI) features as described
in the AVEVA document Getting Started with Plant.
2 Cabling System
The Cabling System application allows the users to create cableways, cables and cableway
material (trays/ladders). If required the cables can also be routed through the cableways.
The application is divided into three main areas, Cableways, Cables and Cableway material.
The cabling design process
2.2 Hierarchy
All database elements are owned by other elements, therefore elements must be created in
a strict order. The following database elements are common to all DESIGN disciplines:
• World
• Site
• Zone
For more information on the generic hierarchical structure and the PDMS design database,
refer to Getting Started with Plant.
Cableway (Cway)
• Cway elements are administrative and can own a number of cableway branches with
common default cabling application defaults and can have any number of ends.
Cable
• Cable elements are administrative and can own a number of cableway branches with a
common default cabling application default. Cables can be routed with or without
cableways with a know head and tail but can also be connected to other branches.
The Storage Areas part of the Cabling Application Defaults window is used to define the
location of the CableWay and Cable elements in the Design database hierarchy. The user
can choose a location from the drop-down menu. If a location is not listed, refer to the
System Administrator.
Note: The list of available storage areas are only populated with zones where the purpose
is set to CABL.
The Cable Data part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the Excess
Lengths and Proximity Distance associated with the specification.
Select the Fill Check check box to automatically check the fill level.
The Specifications part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the basic
details of the specification.
The Cableway Data part of the Cabling Application Defaults window displays the
dimensions of the cableway. Create Ends RNODEs allows the user to create RNODEs on
the ends of the cableway branch.
Fill Check Utility Allowance is the value taken into account when the Fill Level Check
window updates the Branch Points grid cells with a specific colour, green, yellow or red. If a
Cableway Branch maximum fill is 75% and the Fill Check Utility Allowance is set to 5, the
user will be prompted when a specific point on the branch is within 5 of the maximum fill
percentage
The value for this must be greater than 1, if it is not a message is displayed.
Auto Routing Criteria has two options. Selecting Minimise Free Route will route the cable
to or from the closest valid entry or exit point, finding the shortest path through the cableway
branches. Selecting Minimise Total Length will find the shortest possible route between
the start and end points, using any of the valid entry or exit points within the RANEQUIP
range to minimise the length.
The Cabling System toolbar gives quick access to all the tasks associated with the creation
and modification of Cabling.
Depending on the selections made from the Cabling System toolbar, the user will be
presented with further windows prompting for user input and options for the workflow to
continue.
The quick access Cabling System toolbar is automatically displayed in the top left hand
corner of the screen, once the application has been entered.
The user will not be able to make any selections from the Cabling System toolbar if the
correct database hierarchy has not been configured beforehand. For example: certain
cabling elements must reside below other elements in the database hierarchy.
If a particular cabling element cannot be created at the current position in the database
hierarchy the user will receive an error message summarising the problem.
4 Cableway
A cableway element is used to reserve a volume in space through which cables can be run
and the cableway material placed.
Referring to the Cabling Hierarchy, the first task that the user must perform is to create a
cableway element in the Design Database.
Before creating a cableway element the correct database elements should already be
present in the Design Explorer, i.e. a World, Site and Zone should exist. If this is not the
case, refer to Getting Started with Plant for a detailed explanation of creating these standard
elements.
The highlighted element in the Design database hierarchy is automatically displayed as the
Current Element in the CableWay Create Tasks window.
The user can input a Cableway Name, Description, Function and Purpose for the new
CableWay element. Click Create CableWay to create the CableWay.
Note: The Cableway Name can be populated by clicking the Autonaming icon to the right
of the text box.
The CableWay element is created and displayed in the Design Explorer and the
CableWay Branch Create Tasks window is displayed. Refer to Cableway Branch for
further information on CableWay Branches.
The user can input a Control Node Name, Description, Function and Purpose for the
new Control Node.
Note: The Control Node Name can be populated by clicking the Autonaming icon to the
right of the text box.
The Control Node is positioned either by entering explicit co-ordinates, or by clicking Pick
Position and graphically selecting a position.
Click Create Control Node to create the node. The Control Node appears in the 3D
graphical view.
After create the Control Node, the Modify Control Node window is displayed.
The user can modify the Control Node and select Apply Changes to confirm the changes
or Discard Changes to dismiss the changes.
The user can also display the Modify Control Node window by picking a Control Node and
selecting Modify > Control Node from the main menu bar.
Note: Route Nodes can be connected to a Control Node. Refer to Create Route Node for
further information.
5 Cableway Branch
A CableWay Branch is the starting point from which all other Cabling System elements are
added. The task of creating a CableWay Branch is initiated from the CableWay Create Task
window.
Referring to Cabling System Specific Hierarchy, the user must create a Cableway Branch
below an existing CableWay element. For a detailed explanation of how to create a
CableWay element refer to Create CableWay.
The Current Element is displayed in the CableWay Branch Create Tasks window. The
user can enter a name in the Branch Name window.
Attributes
The Attributes part of the CableWay Branch Create Tasks window is used to define the
attributes of the branch element.
Bend Radius Displays the bend radius applied to the cableway, once it
has been created and dressed with material.

once it is dressed with material.
Justification User can select the justification from the pull-down menu.
Cable Excess (%) Specifics how much allowance for sagging (when the cable
is supported on the cableway) is required.
Maximum Fill (%), Specifies the maximum fill level allows on the cableway, (the
software automatically calculates this value based on the
cross sectional area).
Note: If the maximum fill is set below the current fill level, then the following warning will
appear. After reading the warning click OK to continue.
Current Fill Level (%) Displays the current fill level of the cableway.
Interference
Cable Route Rule Specifies the rule to be used, to control the type of cable
that can be routed along the cableway, such as IClass EQ
'POWER'.

routed through the cableway. The user can input its own
values or click Load, to load interference values from a
database.
Note: The user will be prompted to enter different dimensions depending upon the shape
selected.
Connections
The Connections part of the CableWay Branch Create Tasks window defines the way
that the coordinates of the CableWay Branch Head and Tail are derived. These can be
changed by selecting from a choice of options in the Connect From: drop-down menu and
the Branch Head and Branch Tail part of the CableWay Branch Create Tasks window.
Both the Branch Head and Tail parts of the CableWay Branch Create Tasks window,
perform the same function for both the branch head and tail. For the purposes of this user
guide only the Branch Head is explained here.
Note: Moving the Cableway Branch a specified distance in a particular direction can be
done by entering the required co-ordinate values and using the ‘Lock’ boxes on the
CableWay Branch Create Tasks window before creating the Branch. Alternatively, if
the Cableway Branch has been created, the user can select the Branch and move it
into the desired position using the Model Editor. For more information, refer to
