work using only solar energy? For answer that
question we have to find out how solar panels
covert solar energy to electrical energy.
Solar panels are
made up of smaller
units called solar
cells, which are mede
from silicon (aka
silicio). Silicon is a
semiconductor that is
the second most
abundant element on
Earth.
Inside the solar panels, crystalline silicon is
placed between conductive layers. And each
silicon atom is connected to another by four
strong bonds
 For make that thing possible a silicon solar cell uses two
different layes of silicon: one type has extra electrons,
and the other type has extra spaces for electrons, called
holes. When the two types meet electrons can jump
between each one, leaving a positive charge on one side
and creating negative charge on the other. Also when a
photon, the light energy from the Sun, strikes the silicon
cell, it can knock an electron from its bond leaving a hole
and it is able to interact with the other part of the cell.
Consequently there are free electrons that could move
inside the cell. One device is managed to collect them by
thin metal wires at the top of the cell. Finally that wires
lead them to an external circuit dong possible the
electrical work.
