EDUC 648 Math Assessment for RTI Tom Gebbie

Module 4 - Act 1 - Step 3 - Math Issue and WWC 10/20/2018

The math issue that I would like to address in 8th and 9th grade in our district is the lack of algebraic real-world
application questions and projects in the current curriculum. We used to use the IMP (Interactive Mathematics
Program) as supplemental units throughout the curriculum. I wanted to see what the What Works
Clearinghouse (WWC) research said about it and I did not see it on the list of interventions.

Without being able to evaluate IMP I looked to the closest thing which would be the University of Chicago
School Mathematics Program (UCSMP) Algebra. WWC indicates that the two studies “meet standards and
have a potentially positive effect with no overriding contrary evidence”(ESI WWC). Also, the report states that
UCSMP has an “expected positive change in percentile rank for student achievement” (ESI WWC). Basically,
the two studies that WWC analyzed had good results. I would recommend that if my school was interested in
bringing back a more formal algebraic intervention to address the lack of real-world applications in our
curriculum that UCSMP should be considered.
