Thanks for sharing this info.

Measurement of tube expansion is done through tube wall reduction , so same is
being specified.
From mockup data, I understand we are measuring the same till now but probably
calling differently.

Dear Bhaskar

You may consider inputs from attached technical paper for specifying tube expansion limits. I
suggest we indicate tube expansion limits in drawing instead of tube thinning limits. This will
be safe and will not lead to any mis-interpretation.
Dear all,

Thanks for sharing info on Mockup tests of tube to tube sheet joints
conducted at SEZ Kandla and SSW.

Based on Good Engineering specifications and our data of Mockup

tests, We propose to standardize Tube to tube sheet joints as per
below table.
These will be default norms, but Incase customer specifies any
requirements, same shall be followed which shall be reflected in our
drawings.

Please inform if you have any suggestions / additional requirements

based on your experience / expertise.
Maximum allowable Tube wall reduction for roller expanded tube to

* Maximum tube wall reduction % can be increased by further 2% if

required But only with prior approval from Customer
# In case of welded and expanded joints, tube wall reduction should
begun at 12 mm away from welds. In No case shall the expansion
encroach with in 3mm (1/8 ") of the shell side face of tube sheet.
Above norms conforms to table 4 of API 660 Shell and Tube Heat
Exchangers for General Refinery Services.
Dear Sir,

Please see some more details regarding % expansion (for TTJ joint) from reference mock up
of SSW.

This detail will be useful for future project, where client has not specifically specified the
expansion requirements for TTJ joint.

Dear Sir,

Please refer the attached details, as discussed.

Thanks and Regards,

Dear Amol ,

Pl send required information to Prakash

Dear Team,

Please provide the mock up details as requested below in attached sheet along with scanned
mock up procedure.

MOCK UP DETAIL REQUIRED FOR SS AND CS MATERIAL :

1) Strength Weld + Light Expansion - 1 or 2 mock up for each material.

2) Only Heavy Expansion (with expansion grooves) - 1 or 2 mock up for each material.
3) Heavy Expansion + Seal Weld - 1 or 2 mock up for each material

Its urgent, please do needful

Please send the tube to tube sheet expansion data to Bhaskar as requested in mail belwo

Prakash -- Please co-ordinate and help Engineering with this data.

Sure. At present Engineering is specifying expansion requirements
when ever customer has specific requirements.
Henceforth we can also provide this even when no specific
requirements from client.
Though many technical references recommend tube wall reduction of
4 to 7%(depending upon material) for expansion only joints , I
understand our manufacturing is comfortable for 8 to 10 % to ensuring
leak tight joints .

Request your help in organizing to send data /records of successful

mock up tests carried out by us for different tube sizes and materials.
This way we can establish more optimum values of expansion based on
our practices with out taking other references.
It is necessary to specify the value so that expansion can be done accordingly.
please guide the design engineer to specify the value.

For above referenced equipments, in Tube sheet drawing note given for heavy
expansion. see snap.

Please confirm, for heavy expansion how much % of expansion to be

considered?
