Powwow’s Coming by Linda Boyden

Focus:
 Steady beat

Curricular Outcomes:

 Grade 2 – R6, R7; F4, F6; PI8, PI10
 Grade 3 – F8; MV10; S13, S16

Materials Needed:
 Jingle bells
 Egg shakers
 Hand drums

Process:
1. Introduce the book by reading it all the way through.
2. Prepare instrumentation by dividing the class into three groups and teach
the beat and spoken words. Transfer words to body percussion: snaps for
shakers, clap for jingle bells, and pat for drums. Have every group of
students try each part to ensure understanding and confidence.
*Only add instrument parts as your students are able.
3. Introduce introduction as spoken words first, followed by body percussion.
4. Transfer body percussion to instruments.
5. Layer instrumentation by cuing the students’ entrances and cut-offs.
6. Read book with instrumentation.
