PROBLEM

A mountain lake in the national park is stocked

each summer with two species of fish, A and B.
The average weight of the fish stocked is 4 kg for
A and 2 kg of B. Two foods, C and D, are available
in the lake. The average requirement of a fish
species A is 1 unit of C and 3 units of D each day.
The corresponding requirement of B is 2 units of
C and 1 unit of D. If 500 units of C and 900 units of
D are available daily, how should the lake be
stocked to maximize the weight of fish supported
by the lake?
GIVEN

SPECIES OF FISH FOOD C (units) FOOD D (units)

A 1 3

B 2 1

500 units C 900 units D

ANSWER

The lake should be stocked at the 260

of specie A and 120 of specie B in order
to maximize the weight of fish
supported by the lake.
