CHAPTER 1
1. Introduction:

Chapter 1, 2 and 3 shall contain the solutions to Part A, B and C of assignment

statement respectively. Each chapter shall contain a small introduction to the chapter
describing the significance of the question being addressed, the statement of the problem and
methodology of solving the problem.

First chapter being a detailed discussion on a topic indicated in the assignment,

structuring the discussion is of prime importance. The discussion must begin with the facts
and data available on the topic chosen and shall end with a proper conclusion. Relevant
figures and data from open literature can be used to strengthen the discussion and argument.
Cite all barrowed text, figures and tables using the citation number.

All chapters shall end with summary/conclusion/remarks as appropriate to the section

being addressed.

1.1 Presentation

• Normal text – Times New Roman, 12 Font, and regular 1.5 lines spaced, and text
justified, 25 mm margin on the right and left hand side, top and bottom and numbered
pages.
• Heading 1 – Times New Roman 16 Font Bold, 6 pts before and after, Single line
spaced, Right Justified, All Caps case. Heading 1 should be used only for the chapter
headings as given in this template.
• Heading 2 – Times New Roman 14 Font Bold, 6 pts before and after, 1.5 lines spaced,
left justified, Title case. Heading 2 should be used for the main headings in body of
the chapter as shown in this assignment.
• Heading 3 – Times New Roman 12 Font Bold, 6 pts before and after, 1.5 lines spaced,
left justified, Sentence case. Heading 3 should be used for sub-headings in the body of
the chapter as shown in this assignment.
• Heading 4 – Times New Roman 12 Font Bold Italicized, 6 pts before and after, 1.5
lines spaced, left justified, sentence case. Heading 4 should be used for sub-sub
headings in the body of the chapter.
M.S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies –Postgraduate Engineering and Management Programme (PEMP)

• Provide a first line spacing of 0.5 pts for all paragraphs.

• It is preferred to provide a 6 pts spacing before and after a paragraph.

1.2 Plagiarism

It is the policy of the Coventry University that attention is drawn to the nature and
serious consequence of cheating and plagiarism. The following are classified under
plagiarism;
• The submission of an answer that is substantially similar to an answer submitted by
another student in the same, or earlier years, either at this or another University;
• The submission of an answer that is not substantially the delegate’s own work;
• The submission of an answer that contains substantial quotations from other works,
such as books or journals, without appropriate reference to the source;
• The consequences of plagiarism are serious. Any student who (i) copies or otherwise
uses the work of another person, or (ii) allows another person to copy or otherwise
use his or her answer when both are completing the same or similar assessment, will
either lose credit for that assessment, the subject, or be disciplined in some other way
as per the rules and regulations of the Coventry University.
The citation of references in the text must be made mentioning the serial number of
reference material as listed in the reference section within square brackets as shown in the
paragraph above. More than one reference can be shown as in [1-6] or [1-3, 5, 7-8]. A
reference may be cited any number of times, but the first time reference must follow the
serial order, i.e., order of appearance in the text must match with the serial order of reference
list. Bibliographic material need not be cited in the text using its serial number.

The Insert Reference menu available in WORD is encouraged to be used in citation and
styling the reference list.

CHAPTER 2

2. Figures, Charts and Graphs

The figures must be self-explanatory and proper caption must be given at the bottom
of the figure. A graph, picture, copy of photograph are all considered as figures. The graphs
and contour plots are required in “black and white” mode and not in colour mode. The
centred symbols, curves, values on the axes shown in the graph must be distinct, legible and
readable in the size it is printed. Figures must be clear and the texts in the figures must be
readable with minimum font size of 10 in TNR or equivalent. A legend for symbols used in
graphs or charts are to be provided either within the frame of the picture or in the caption of
the figure. The axes of the graph must be labelled and quantified. The units of the quantities
used must be mentioned. All figures, charts, graphics and pictures listed must be referred in
the text. Please avoid snapshots of windows, poor images and too big-in-size pictures. The
text and numerals if any in the picture must be of readable size. Avoid using the option of
inserting images from file as this could result in corrupted images if the source is not
available. Use grabbing software to copy image and paste in the document. The graphs must
contain the axis label with units for the axes; the label and the number must be readable with
minimum font size of 10 in TNR or equivalent. Figure when citied in the beginning of the
sentence should be cited in full (ex. Figure 1.1 shows that.......) whereas if it is cited in the
middle or end of text it should be referred as Fig. (ex. The variation of reaction force with
time is shown in Fig. 1.) It is preferred to have the figure inserted at a location nearer to
where it is referenced in the text. The caption for figures should be at the bottom of the figure
and centred. All figures used should be cited in text atleast once.

2.1 Format for figures

A new breed of aero-derivative gas turbines has been developed specifically for ships,
offshore oil platforms, and land vehicles and is shown in Figure 2.1. The citation for the
figure is included in the title of the figure. The caption is to be customized for each chapter.
In other words, figures and tables in chapter-1 will begin with 1 such as 1.1, 1.2 and so on.
The figures and tables in chapter-2 will be 2.1, 2.2 and so on. Some more examples for
figures and graphs are shown in Figure 2.2 and Figure 2.3.

Figure 2.2 Comparison of computational and experimental data for Rotor 37

Figure 2.3 Relative Mach number contours at 99.99 % span at design point

2.2 Format for tables

A table must be numbered and suitable caption must be given. The caption should be
on the top of the table and centered. All tables included must be cited in the text at least once.
<Type the module title here>
4
M.S Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies –Postgraduate Engineering and Management Programme (PEMP)

The table should include units used (if any) for the variables listed. Any borrowed figure or
table also must be cited with its reference list number in the title. Tables must be constructed
using the table-tool available in MS-Word only. Do not include image of tables created in
other applications. Tables must be numbered sequentially. Include the units of measurements
in the table text wherever the variable list is used. Table 2. 1 shows the formatting for a
sample table.

2.3 Format for equations

Any equation must be numbered and cited in the text. Mathematical symbols and
formulae should be typed using MS-office equation-editor. Particular care should be
exercised in identifying all symbols and in avoiding ambiguities. Distinction should be made
between the number one (1) and the letter l (ell) and between zero (0) and the letter O.
Vectors and tensors should be marked clearly on the manuscript. Equation numbers should
appear in parenthesis and be numbered consecutively. All equation numbers must appear on
the right-hand side of the equation and should be referred to within the text.

Ex:

b
a= sin 2 (α + β ) ………………………. (1.1)
c

The variable a can be computed using the expression (1.1). This facilitates ….

CHAPTER 4
4.1 Comments on Learning Outcome:

Students are required to summarise their comments about the appropriateness of

assignment given in the light of defined learning outcomes of the module. The comments
must be appropriate and specific to the assignment problems and their relevance to the testing
of learning outcomes. This must also reflect the learning made by the student in this module.
Do not extend this section to more than half or 3/4th of A4 page.

4.2 Summary/Conclusion

Summarise the overall work carried out in the assignment. Summary may be in the
form of a few bullets. The conclusions drawn also need to be included. Do not extend this
section to more than one A4 page.

Please Note:

Convert the Word Document to PDF and check the document page by page before
submitting the PDF file for appropriate flow of text, figures and tables and ensure
proper pagination. You must submit only the PDF file and not the Word file.
