ED 345 Calvin College Teacher Intern Lesson Plan Template

Teacher Intern: Rachel Jung Date: 10/8

Grade Level: 1st Subject/ Topic: Social Studies/ Introduction: Who are good citizens?
Approx. time spent planning this lesson: 2 hours *The template will expand as text is
added.*
DOMAIN 1: PLANNING & PREPARATION
Main Focus/Essential Questions: Who are good citizens?
Brief Context: students will be able to develop their own ideas about being a good citizen. Students will be able to
identify what they already know, what they wonder, and what they learned about good citizens.
Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills:
Lesson Objectives/Learning Targets Aligned Assessments
Consider formative & summative tools
Please number objectives and the aligned assessment measures.
The learner will: I will assess learning by:
1. Be able to define good citizens after watching a 1. Having students discuss what they have learned
short video about good citizens. about the video and having students predict
2. Students will be able to fill out KWL chart for whether the people in the pictures take actions
pre-assessment. as good citizens or not and discuss why
2. Have students write one sentence and draw one
picture for each column
Standards Addressed in Lesson: 1.SS.11 Describe situations in which people act as good citizens and
demonstrate Catholic values and core democratic values. (Include full standard.)
Instructional Resources: video clip, kwl chart, smartboard

Consideration of Learners:
How have you responded to your diverse learners? Consider UDL (Multiple means of Engagement, Representation,
Action & Expression) & principles of differentiation. If appropriate, identify individual accommodations you will make
in response to needs or interests of students.
- Students think, pair, and share about the word “good citizens”. Giving each student time to think about the topic
and discuss with their peers will help them guide their thinking and organize their ideas. For ESL, students will be
able to organize words in a sentence with the time given to think about and share with their peers.
- Giving students a sentence format to use when sharing provides a good example to practice giving opinions
logically and clearly.
- Watching a video about good citizens help students imagine if they can be good citizens. Students gain a brief
understanding about being a good citizenship.
- With different pictures represented, students can figure out who act/ do not act like a good citizen. Students can
apply to themselves if they have been acting like good citizens.

DOMAIN 2: THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

COVENANT MANAGEMENT: Relationship & community building (Note any specific ways in which you plan to build or
strengthen relationships and community: student-student & teacher - student.]
- Students think, pair, & share about “good citizens” with their peers and teacher.
- Students and teacher discuss the video and what they learned from the video.

CONDUCT MANAGEMENT: (Behavioral expectations, strategies to encourage self- regulation, etc.)

Identify at least 2 ways you will gain whole group attention:
- One, two, three eyes on me
- Asking if they are self-controlling their body and their words.
- Remind them the class rules and how they are following those rules.
Strategies you intend to use to redirect individual students:
- Walking around the classroom, tapping shoulders
CONTENT MANAGEMENT: Note procedures/routines that are expected or embedded.
- n/a

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Note any specific ways you will use the environment to contribute to the learning.
- Smartboard for the video
- Students will sit with their table groups

DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION
CONTENT MANAGEMENT: YOUR INSTRUCTION
Motivation/Opening/Intro: [Think creatively about how to recruit learning.]
- Introduce the Unit
o Write “Good citizens” on the smart board.
o Have students read the word and think, pair, share about the word “Good citizens”
 Give them a sentence format (“ I think “good citizens” means ____, because…)
Development: [It may help to number your steps with corresponding times.]
o Unit overview
 Show a short videoclip about being a good citizen
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bwfo9aD5A8)
 Discuss what they learned from the video that they did not know before
 Show different pictures of actions that people take and discuss with the students whether the
person/people act like good citizens
Closure: (Be creative and consider authentic audiences for the work. Think beyond giving an assignment or
independent practice.)
- Pre-assessment
o Introduce KWL chart
 Explain what KWL chart is and how to fill it out
 Create KWL on the smartboard and fill it out together with the students based on the topic
“Good citizens” (modeling)
 Have students fill out each column of the chart: one thing they already know about good
citizens, one thing they want to know about good citizens, and one thing they want to learn
about good citizens; give illustration for each sentence on the bottom
o Sharing time
 Have 2-3 students share their KWL chart

DOMAIN #4: PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

EVIDENCE OF PROFESSIONALISM: Please note recent evidence of your efforts as a professional.
- Prepared lesson materials on the previous day
- Wore professionally
REFLECTION AFTER TEACHING THE LESSON:
As I expected, students had no understanding about the term “citizen”. It took time to teach the concept but with
visual support from the video, students were able to grasp some ideas about being a good citizen. Next time when I
will be teaching this lesson again, I would first provide the definition of “citizen” and then have students to explain
what it would mean in their own ideas. Also, “Think, pair, and share” activity was not a familiar activity for my
students. I should have introduced the activity with lots of modeling first and then incorporated this activity later.
Having students to think about the term before giving out explanation was very challenging to the first graders. I
might need to have different introduction part for this lesson so that it is more engaging and interesting to the
students. I would act out two different situations where one is being a good citizen and one is not being a good
citizen. Then, I would have students to figure out the differences between these two situations and then introduce
the unit.
