C-IQ® for Coaches MODULE 1 Q&A

(Questions in bold, responses in italic)

Q - Does the neural response depend on each of our understanding of the word?
i.e. if my experience of collaboration is entirely positive, will I still get the negative
neural feedback?
A - This is a great question - It makes sense to double click on meanings of important
words like collaboration and co-creating to better understand where others may be with
a word. As Judith pointed out “Words Create Worlds” and a word can cause a shift to
fear or concern and not necessarily be positive or motivating to someone else.

Q - When I am in deep meditation, a purple light always comes searching for me.
Later I learned that the color purple is associated with the third eye. Do you have
any comment on this, Judith?
A - Judith may want to comment on this as well. Yes purple can be associated with the
3rd Eye. There can be many reasons why you are seeing purple. As a meditation
teacher I have seen many things and asked many questions. I once had a meditation
teacher that told me after I gave a vivid description of all the colors and shapes I saw
during my meditation he responded by saying, “that is amazing! Report back when you
see nothing at all.” Point being that what you see is very personal to your journey.

Q - What are co-regulatory genes? Did I miss this?

A - Pg. 116 in book. “By using conversational tools and the Conversational Dashboard,
you and your colleagues become co-regulators of your emotional experience.” C-IQ
focuses on co-regulation which in essence is people sharing in the up-regulation and
down-regulation of neurochemistry, emotions and shared experience.

Q - What does Lock in a Pattern mean?

A - It means to try a new way of thinking, doing or reacting resulting in that becoming
the new pattern of behavior and communicating.

Q - Where can we read about really gaps and 3rd eye (connecting intention and
impact)?
A - Pg. 101, 104-107 in the book

Q - My fear is that the sharing moves to a love in and how does this translate into
higher productivity in a company?
A - I have been coaching for over 30 years and my experience is that people are initially
concerned that ‘sharing’ will lead to a love in, however my actual experience is that
sharing creates openness and connection, new learning about each other and is very
impactful. It is perhaps a matter of what you ask them to share.

Q - When is self disclosure as a coach applicable? Can we do this?

A - This is just my methodology but I ere on the side of what I call a “therapeutic truth.”
Meaning that I typically do not share my personal life stories but one that is more
aligned with a client’s journey or circumstance. I as the coach like to remain neutral
and share things that I have helped others with that may be in line to help this current
cient.

Q - Will we also be spotlighting specific kind of brain wiring, such as ADHD

and/or Dyslexic brain wiring and their reaction to Co-Creating Conversations?
A - I answered this in the questions box and said that we are not covering specific
diagnosis or brain wiring but that if you put a post on FB it may allow others to post
articles and knowledge that are related. I also said that Judith may have some
experience she has not shared yet. On another not we can add that I wrote a piece for
us last year about personality disorders and autism spectrum with C-IQ.

Q - Will there be work on ego - how to manage your own and then others? I think
ego can interfere with this work , has Judith found this?
A - One of the primary focuses of Conversational Intelligence is to move from I Centric
to WE Centric. We also look at the three Levels of Conversation which will help to
move from positional or ego to Transformational - co-creation

Q - Anything in the research about the gut brain?

A - Please refer to pages 4 and 5 in Conversational Intelligence
Q - Please say more about Heart Brain - is this in the reptilian brain?
A - Please see great detail in Conversational Intelligence pages 52-54

Q - I have a follow-up question on the neurochemistry relation: would you be able

to share some papers (or references to it) that describe the relation of reflective
actions (that how I see meaningful conversations) with neuroscience? I'm
intrigued by the idea that the composition of hormones and neurotransmitters
opens certain brain functions - truly fascinating and it makes perfect sense.
Does it mean that if we would be able to create this composition in another way
than conversation, we would be able to facilitate reflective space? I'm thinking of
physical activities such as theater that potentially also trigger serotonin, oxytocin,
or dopamine.
A - My background prior to coaching is in Expressive Arts Therapy and Somatic
Psychology. I do know and have developed programs using specific yet simple
movement patterning coupled with the use of language to “open up certain parts of the
brain.” With that said language is a key component in the methodology. There are
many things that open up parts of the brain including Expressive Art modalities such as
theatre, improv, storytelling, poetry etc. C-IQ is essential in all of these in that if there is
not trust and the ability to co-regulate one may experience stressors and shutting down
of parts of the brain when co-creating and expressing in this way.

Q - I find that the C-IQ has a lot to do with the coaching-presence (ICF core
competcy no 4) and I would love to hear Judith thoughts around the connection
of Presence, I-CQ and Oxytocin. Will you please comment on this Judith?
A - In alignment with the ICF Presencing Competency we focus additionally on
“Co- creating a We-Centric focus in order to “stand under” the client’s reality;
co-create a partnership by deeply understanding the client’s views and perspectives”
