CHAPTER 1

DUCTING
DUCTING:-
Ducting helps move hot or cold air throughout your home or building. To most home or building
owners, ducting might look like simple piping, but there is a great deal of thought (and math)
that goes into setting up efficient ductwork. Every bend in the duct reduces the efficiency of the
air moving through it. A long run of ductwork can also create air flow issues, which reduce
comfort and energy efficiency.

FIG.1:- DUCTING

If your ducting is old or poorly fitting, you could be losing 20-30% or MORE of your heating or
cooling efficiency through leaks in the system!

The team members at Thompson Heating and Air Conditioning are experts at designing and
building complex duct runs that can work within your existing building. When you need to move
air, you need custom flex ducting or sheet metal ducting. Thompson Heating and Air
Conditioning can build and install for you.

“We have used Thompson Heating and Air for a few years now. The first time was the
installation of a complete HVAC system with three zones and all new ducting and
components. They worked over the winter holiday while we were on a vacation and we came
home to a completed system that works beautifully.”

CHAPTER 2
DUCT REPAIR & INSTALLATION
Quality Air Ducts can help increase the efficiency of your ac system as well as make your home
more comfortable. Bay Area Heating and Cooling offers a host of air duct services throughout
Tampa, Clearwater, St Pete, Largo, Seminole, Palm Harbor and the surrounding areas to
ensure both:

2.1 AIR DUCT INSTALLATION:-

New air ducts are a great compliment to a new ac system. Replacement ducts can also improve
the performance of older ac units.

Bay Area can design and install new metal or flexible ductwork for your home or business in a
professional and timely manner. The result?Rooms that cool more quickly and deliver better
quality air.

2.2 AIR DUCT SANITATION:-

Bay Area’s complete duct sanitization uses a specially formulated cleaner to controls smoke, pet,
human, cooking, spoilage, musty and other foul odors and other sources of indoor pollution
gently but effectively. It freshens and deodorizes interiors of both lined and unlined ductwork.

Note: The Bay Area duct sanitation is NOT the same as an advertised duct cleaning and therefore
does not utilize a brush or vaccuum of any sort. Cleaning with a brush can damage flexible air
ducts and create leaks. For this reason, when a duct requires thorough or extensive “cleaning”,
Bay Area recommends replacement.

2.3 AIR DUCT INSTALLATION, TESTING & REPAIR:-

FIG. 2.3:-Repair, installation and maintenance of air ducts.

2.3.1 Why Is a Properly Installed Air Ducting System So Important?:-

Is your homes leaky air ducting wasting money and making you sick? Repair, seal, or replace old
duct work for better comfort and health. According to the Energy Conservatory, there are more
than a million miles of duct work installed in homes across the United States. Studies indicate
that more than two-thirds of them are leaky enough to justify sealing, repair, or complete
replacement. Leaking air ducting will significantly increase your air conditioning and heating
bills, introduce potentially harmful indoors air quality problems, and significantly lower
performance and capacity. Air-ducting leakage is to blame for most of the complaints regarding
homeowner comfort.

 Uneven temperatures (hot and cold rooms)

2.3.2 Measuring Air Ducting Leakage:-

Although in many cases, leaking air ducting has a greater impact on energy use than infiltration
through doors, windows and fireplaces, it is more concerning that leaking air ducting can create
indoors air quality problems by pulling harmful pollutants and other respiratory irritants directly
into your home.

Here are some of the other ways leaking air ducting can prevent your heating and cooling system
from performing to its full capacity:

KGM ENTERPRSES Page 4

 Leaks in the air ducting cause expensive conditioned air to be blown into the attic,
crawlspace or garage instead of your home, extending the operational time of the equipment.
 Return air leaks pull outside air (hot in summer and cold in winter) into the air ducting
system, reducing both performance and capacity. In humid climates, moist air being drawn
into return leaks can overwhelm the dehumidification process of an air conditioning system
causing your home to feel clammy, even when the air conditioner is running.
 Heat pumps are particularly susceptible to comfort complaints from air ducting leakage,
especially during the heating season. Air ducting leaks can cause the air coming from the air
handlers to feel lukewarm or even cold during the winter. Additionally, Studies indicate that
the use of electric strip heaters in air handlers significantly increases during the heating
season.
 Leaks in return air ducting draw air into your home from crawlspaces, garages and attics,
bringing with it dust, mold spores, insulation fibers and other contaminants.
 Household depressurization from duct leaks and imbalanced air ducting systems can cause
spillage of combustion products (from furnaces, water heaters and fireplaces) into your
home.

An air ducting leakage performance test involves pressurizing the air ducting system with a
calibrated fan and simultaneously measuring the airflow through the fan and its effect on the
pressure within the air ducting system. The tighter the air ducting system, the less air you need
from the fan to create a change in the air ducting system pressure. Duct leakage measurements
are used to diagnose and demonstrate leakage problems, estimate efficiency losses from air
ducting leakage, and certify the quality of an air ducting installation.

2.4 AIR DUCTING REMOVAL AND ABATEMENT:-

2.4.1 Asbestos Removal:-
In many older homes, asbestos-type materials were used to insulate components of heating and
air conditioning ductwork. Exposure to this type of airborne friable asbestos may result in a
potential health risk because persons breathing the air may breathe in asbestos fibers. Continued
exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lung. Fibers embedded in lung
tissue over time may cause serious lung diseases including: asbestosis, lung cancer, or
mesothelioma. An outside licensed contractor in this field performs the asbestos removal
process.

CHAPTER 3
HOW TO REPAIR HOLES IN HVAC DUCTS
Wrap a hole in duct work with metal tape.

Heating, ventilation and air air conditioning (HVAC) ducts are generally made of lightweight
sheet metal, whether they are the solid or flexible type. A hole in the duct work will cause
leakage in the system and lower the efficiency of the unit. The most permanent solution for an
HVAC sheet metal hole is to replace the entire section of the duct work. That isn't always
possible, however, at any given moment. Wrapping a hole with duct tape is also not practical, as
the adhesive on the tape may begin to deteriorate and cause the duct tape to unravel almost
immediately. But there is a type of wrap made especially for holes.

FIG.3 :-SURE-CLAMP SPIRAL CLAMP TOGETHER DUCTWORK & FITTINGS

KGM ENTERPRSES Page 6

3.1 STEPS:-
1

Wash the duct area where the hole is using a soapy dishwater solution in a bucket and a rag. You
must wash the entire circumference of the duct to be repaired and rinse it thoroughly when
finished. Allow the duct to completely dry.

Pull about 6 inches of Underwriters Laboratory 181 Approved aluminum sealing tape off of the
spool. This can be found at home and garden stores, HVAC shops and hardware stores. Then
pull the wax paper backing from the tape.

Begin taping a few inches above the hole. As you use the original 6 inches, pull, out another 6
inches of tape, remove the wax-paper backing and continue wrapping around the duct. Slightly
overlap each edge of the tape with each pass.

Make at least three passes over the hole as you wrap the duct. This will overlap each edge one
time. Press the tape down firmly with a putty knife, after each pass, to ensure a solid, air-tight
seal.

Cut the tape when the hole is wrapped using a pair of scissors. Dispose of the wax-paper backing
when finished.

3.2 THINGS YOU WILL NEED:-

 Aluminum tape, Underwriters Laboratories 181 Approved
 Putty knife
 Mastic
 Soapy dishwater solution
 Bucket
 Rag
 Clean water
 Scissors
 Sheet metal patch
 Self-tapping sheet metal screws
 Drill with appropriate driver bit
 Sheet metal shears

KGM ENTERPRSES Page 7

3.3 TIP:-
 There are several widths of tape to choose from. Two-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch widths are
common. Choose the width that easily covers the hole with one pass.
 A thin sheet metal patch can also be cut to fit the hole with sheet metal shears. The patch
is screwed into place with self-tapping sheet metal screws, and then mastic is applied
along the edges to ensure an airtight seal.
 For smaller holes, apply mastic like caulk. Push some mastic directly into the hole for a
quick and easy seal.

3.4 WARNING:-
 Sheet metal edges are sharp. When handling sheet metal, always wear leather palm
gloves.

GAS DUCTED HEATING INSTALLATION
MELBOURNE
Ducted gas heating systems are traditionally the most common form of whole-of-home gas
heating.

These systems draw air from inside the home through a heat exchanger for rapid warming and
distribution through outlets in the floor or ceiling

Coldflow are your expert gas ducted heating suppliers, installers and repairers in Melbourne.
Call us for a quote today!

4.1 FEATURES:-
 Highly efficient
 Cost effective
 Requires little maintenance
 Uses natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

These systems are adaptable to the option of introducing cooling through the same outlets.
Commonly referred to as ‘gas add-on’, this involves a cooling fan coil being incorporated at the
design stage, allowing you the versatility of receiving cooling from the same system during the
hot summer months.

Zone control may also be introduced to further reduce the running cost of ducted heating
systems, and allow you the option of deciding which areas or rooms to heat or cool by switching
the zones on or off.

These options, combined with the ducted heating specials we offer our Melbourne customers,
make it a cost-effective gas central heating solution.

FIG. 4.2:- DIFFERENT TEMP. RANGE AT DIFFERENT ROOMS IN HOME

4.2 WHAT DO THE SYSTEMS CONSIST OF?:-

 A furnace fueled by natural gas or LPG. Air is drawn in by a fan, and passed over a heat
exchanger to warm it. The furnace is usually installed in the roof space or externally, but
CAN also be placed under the floor or even in internal cupboards if space is limited.
 Ducting distributes the heated air through the home. It is usually laid above the ceiling or
under the floor, but can be placed between floors or in other cavities, depending on
available room.
 Registers (also called ‘outlets’ or ‘vents’), attached to the floor or ceiling, or sometimes
the wall, direct warm air into rooms. Provided ceiling registers are correctly positioned,
and of appropriate design, they will provide a similar heating effectiveness to floor
registers. Floor registers are usually located near outside walls to allow heat to fully flow
back through the house to the return air grille. Ceiling registers should be located
centrally in a room, or between the center and external walls.
 A return air vent (grille) recirculates air to the furnace, beginning the cycle again. The
grille should be located at or near floor level or in ceiling or roof.
