Seventh Semester B. E. (Electronics Design Technology/Electronics

Engineering) Examination
Elective – I
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

Time : 3 Hours ] [ Max. Marks : 60

Instructions to Candidates :—
(1) Answer all the questions.
(2) Use of Erlang-B and Erlang-C chart is permitted.
(3) Illustrate your answers with the help of neat sketches wherever necessary.
(4) Show the Graphs/bar chart on answer books neatly.

1. (a) Assume that Nagpur city area is covered by a cellular radio system with
84 cells and a cluster size N. 300 voice channels are available for the
system. It is assumed that the users are uniformly distributed over the area
covered by the cellular system and the offered traffic per user is 0.04
Erlang. Assume that blocked calls are cleared and the designated blocking
probability is Pb = 1%.
Determine the maximum carried traffic per cell for cluster size N = 4, 7,
and 12. Also determine the maximum number of users that can be served
by the system for a blocking probability of 1% and cluster size of
N = 4, 7, and 12. Show the results in tabular form. 5 (CO 1)
(b) Repeat Q. 1 (a) for blocking probability Pb = 2%. Show variation of
number of users with respect to cluster size for Pb = 1% and 2% on
single bar chart. Write your conclusion from this bar chart. 7 (CO 1)

2. (a) If a WLAN transmitter operating at 2.4 GHz is located at the ground

floor of Electronics Engineering department in our campus and the power
transmitted by the transmitter is 10 dBm, what is the received power in
dBm at a distance of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 meters away from the transmitter.
Assume unity gain antennas and consider free space propagation.
5 (CO 1)

ITSJ/RW-17 / 1113 Contd.

(b) For Q. 2 (a) calculate the amount of path loss experienced at a distance
of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 meters and show its nature with respect to distance
on a graph. Write your comments from the results shown in graph.
5 (CO 1)

3. (a) How QAM is fundamentally different from QPSK ? Support your answer
with its transmitter block diagrams. 5 (CO 3)
(b) How does OFDM system combat the intersymbol interference (ISI) effect
over wireless channel ? 4 (CO 3)

4. (a) Give the mathematical model of adaptive equalizer and show that adaptive
equalizer compensate ISI created by multipath. 5 (CO 2)
(b) What is fast fading ? How does Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) and
equal gain combining helps to improve the quality of communication in the
presence of slow and fast fading ? 5 (CO 2)

5. (a) What are the main salients features of spread spectrum multiple access which
make this method highly suitable for multipath environment ? 5 (CO 3)
(b) The Pacific Digital Cellular (PDC) TDMA system uses a 42.0 kbps data
rate to support 3 users per frame. Each user occupies two of the six
time slots per frame.
(i) What is the raw data rate provided for each user ?
(ii) If the frame efficiency is 80% and the frame duration is 6.667
ms., determine the number of information bits sent to each
user per frame. 5 (CO 3)

6. (a) How does a mobile originated call gets initiated and connected in a GSM
Network ? Support your answer with the help of role performed by various
network subsystems. 5 (CO 4)
(b) How does MIMO exploit multipath ? Support your answer with the help
of 4 x 4 system model. 4 (CO 4)
