Purpose:

After a new Huawei 3G NodeB commissioning and integration or a swap, the site functionality must be
verified.

Usually a drive-test team on site is performing the drive-tests, radio measurements and site functionality.
But more recent trends are (to improve cost reduction) that the equipment installation teams (Sub-
Contractors) should verify the site functionality (radio field tests, Voice and Data traffic tests etc.).
Sometimes they don’t have knowledge/time to do that and they ask you to verify that the site is fully
functional after configuration is finished.

For a Huawei 3G CS (Circuit – Switched i.e. Voice) and PS (Packet – Switched i.e. Data) you can check the
related counters and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which are collected hourly by U2000. Or you can
activate the interested counters/KPIs to be collected every 5/15/30 minutes (for different counters –
different periods are available).

Prerequisites/Preparation:

- It is assumed that the NodeB is successfully configured and no faults/alarms present on site.
- All the Cells of the NodeB are unblocked and activated.
- You have access to NodeB / RNC through OMC (U2000)/ WebLMT.
- Knowledge of UMTS Technology.

Procedure:

1. Verify the Connected Users per cell

Firstly, you should identify the CellID of your cell, either by opening MML command on the
NodeB and execute the command LST ULOCELL, or by opening an MML command on the RNC
where the cells are configured and execute the command:
DSP UCELL: DSPT=BYNODEB,NODEBNAME= “NodeB Name”;
After you got the CellID you can verify the number of users connected to this cell by executing
the following command and scrolling back up a little (in the picture below you see 9 DCH users
(Dedicated Channel – voice and data active users) and 2 FACH users (Forward Access Channel –
RRC Connected users with low data, or no data but control channel active). From those 9 DCH
users - 4 users are HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), 2 are HSUPA (High Speed Uplink
Packet Access, may be the same users as the HSDPA/64QAM users) and 2 are HSDPA 64QAM
users (High speed)):
DSP UCELLCHK:CHECKSCOPE=CELLID,CELLID=1874;
If you don’t see any users on all the cells of the site it may mean one of two things – either there
are no users now on the site covered area (which is highly unlikely), or you have issues on site
(hardware and/or configuration). Even if you do have DCH/FACH/HSDPA/HSUPA/64QAM users on
the cell it does not necessarily mean that CS traffic (Voice calls) is OK, for example in the case
when the cells are not declared at the CS Core Network - the users will be able to camp on the
cell, but won’t be able to make/receive calls. In this case how do we check the CS traffic? We
could do this, either by launching and reading cell traces or by checking the performance
counters and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). Due to complexity of reading (understanding)
traces, we will cover here only the KPI/Counter verification.

2. The CS traffic (Voice traffic) can be verified from performance counters and KPIs (as well as all
other services) through the Performance application – Query Result Function:

a. Press New Query:

b. In the left panel of the newly opened window select the interested Function Subset (in this case
BSC6900 UMTS (or BSC6910 UMTS for the 6910 RNC type) -> Measurements Related to Traffic ->
Traffic Measurement <per Cell>):
c. In the right panel (Object tab) you should choose the UMTS cell you want to check and
double-click on it (it will move to the right in selected objects window):

d. Now you should choose the counters/KPIs from Counter tab (as you can see from the picture
below, only the 60min and 5min periods are available to choose from, but by default only the
60min counters are activated, the procedure to activate the counter collection period of 5min
may be found in this article: “How to check the LTE Voice and Data Services after site integration /
swap (Huawei SRAN 12)”). In the figure below choose Voice Traffic Best_Cell counter which is a
default Huawei extended counter that provides the mean number of UEs that use the AMR
speech Service (narrowband and wideband AMR (HD Voice) services) in the cell (counter valid for
SRAN12.1, may be changed in the newer software versions):

e. In the Time tab you can choose the period for which you want to check the
counters (in the screen below is selected All which represents the last three weeks):
f. Press Query. After several seconds/minutes the results will be displayed in Table format. You
have three options to visualize the data . Choose the Line Chart, then in
the right part of the window select the object and the Counter/KPI you want to visualize. From
the picture below we do not see a lot of voice traffic (up to 0.25 Erlang), but the scope is to verify
that CS traffic works on this cell, so the answer is Yes:

You may want to verify the CSSR (Call Setup Success Rate) as well, or in this case CS RAB Setup
Success Ratio (which is an important KPI, also an extended formula, ideally the Radio should be
100%, usually >98% is acceptable):
The CS RAB Setup Success Ratio represents the ratio between the successfully established CS
RABs and Setup attempts, i.e. for AMR services (Adaptive Multi Rate Voice services) the CSSR=
VS.RAB.SuccEstabCS.AMR/VS.RAB.AttEstab.AMR*100. The CS RAB Setup Success Ratio KPI
includes all types of CS services (Voice services – AMR, WB-AMR, Conversational 64kbps etc.).
The KPI is valid for SRAN12.1, for newer software version it may be subject to change.

g. Site Throughput Monitoring (Ethernet Port (Physical Layer) Throughput) – see the article “ How
to check the LTE Voice and Data Services after site integration / swap (Huawei
SRAN 12)”.
