1. 2 of the 6 squares are shaded, so the fraction shaded is = ,
6 3
hence (B).

2. 17 + 6 = 23, or, alternatively, 23 − 17 = 6,

hence (D).

we can see that in (A) no triangle will fold to the right hand edge of the square
base, (B) can fold to make a square pyramid, (C) no triangle will fold to the right
hand edge of the square base, (D) again no triangle will fold to the right hand edge
of the square base and (E) has 6 faces, one more than a square pyramid, so (B) is
the only one which will fold to make a square based pyramid,
hence (B).

4. Filling in the missing squares, we get the next two numbers in the second row as
4 and 8.
Then the numbers in the third row are 12 and 20.

32

12 20

4 8 12

1 3 5 7

And so the number in the top square is 12 + 20 = 32,

hence (A).

5. Sam has to pay $(460 − 46) = $414,

hence (C).

6. If each child can blow up 3 balloons in 1 minute, 5 children can blow up 5 × 3 = 15

balloons in 1 minute and so 2 × 15 = 30 balloons in 2 minutes,
hence (B).

7. As Jenny missed the 09:27 am bus by 2 minutes, she arrived at the bus stop at
09:29 am. The time from then to 09:57 am is 28 minutes,
hence (C).

8. The numbers in order are 579; 597; 759; 795; 957 and 975, so the number 795 is in
the fourth position,
hence (C).

9. Since Phil sits at a desk fourth from the front and third from the back, there must
be 6 rows of desks.
Since there are four desks to the right of Phil’s and one to the left, there must be
6 columns of desks.
There are then 6 rows and 6 columns of desks in the classroom, which is 6 × 6 = 36
desks.

10. The carpenter made 20 chairs and stools. If she had made 20 chairs, the number
of legs these would have is 4 × 20 = 80, which is 7 legs more than she has.
This means that there must have been 7 stools in the total of 20, and so she must
have made 13 chairs.
