DEBATE INVITATIONS. It's debate and forum season for the candidates for governor and the U.S. House ~ so why not
forsecretary of state, too?
Hanover Town Democratic chair Deborah Bacon Nelson has invited the three candidates forthe state's top election
participate in a structured debate related to the functions of the office.”

“The office of secretary of state has not been seriously contested in over 40 years,” Bacon Nelson wrote in the
invitations to Secretary of State Bill Gardner and his two announced challengers ~ former Executive Councilor Colin Van
‘stern and former state Rep. Peter Sullivan,
“We believe that it is time to have an open and honest conversation about the functions of the office, including the
administration of elections, especially given the recent changes to the meaning ofthe term ‘resident’ and ‘domicile.’
“Asa town with a college population, and as citizens concerned about the degree to which the state’, ors not, taking,
necessary precautions to guard against the hacking of voting machines, we have a great deal of concern about
‘upcoming electionsin the State of New Hampshire.
“We also have a population interested in hosting a discussion about these issues, and one thatis eager to participatein
a thoughtful conversation.”
Bacon Nelson said that Sullivan told her heis interested in participating.
‘Van Ostern spokesperson Shannon MacLeod told us, “Colin is happy to accept this invitation and hopes this will be one
ina series of debates across the state this summer and fall about how we can best modernize the office, support local
town officials, and protect free & fair elections against politcal interference.
“No ones entitled to this job, even after 42 years, and our state legislators, candidates, town officials and the people of
New Hampshire deserve to hear directly from those seeking the office of secretary of state ~ especially considering
‘Secretary Gardner has already been visiting fringe political groups like Rochester 9/12 earlier this summer to court
legislative candidates himself."
