i. To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of the good actor; you must be able to hold
the attention of your audience; you must be clear speaker; with a good strong, pleasing voice
which is fully under your control and you must be able to act what you are teaching in order
to make its meaning clear. Watch a good teacher and you will see that he does not sit
motionless, he stands the whole time he is teaching. The fact a good teacher has some of the
gifts of a good actor does not mean that he will be able to act well on the stage, for there are
very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. The actor has to
speak the sentences which he has learnt by heart. A good teacher works in quite a different
way. His audience takes an active part his play. They ask and answers questions. The
teacher has, therefore to suit his acts to all needs of his audience, i.e. class. He cannot learn
his part by heart; he must invent it as he goes along. A good teacher has the talent of
abactor. He expresses through the movements of his organs and gestures. A good teacher
has well modulated yet powerful and pleasant voice. This holds the attention and interest of
his pupils. He moves about in the class. Although he is different form an actor as his success
depends on adaptability of methods to the need of his pupils. On the other hand, an actor has
to stick to the role he is assigned to him.
ii. The aim of education is not merely to cram the mind of a man with information to enable
him to talk learnedly about books. Nor is it to prepare him merely for a profession that pays.
Its aim is to draw out all his faculties. Its true end is to develop in him every intellectual and
moral power. It will not be a complete and generous education, if it does not strengthen him
physically, mentally and spiritually and makes him a useful, patriotic, pious gentleman with
wide sympathies and decency of conduct. Education is a failure if it does not produce a
balanced personality free from prejudices of all kinds, self, controlling, self developing, self-
respecting and respecting others.
iii. Our civilization has many good parts. First, it has given us order and safety. Today, we do
not get beaten up by another man only because he is strong than us. We can go to law and
the law will protect us. We may not realize the importance of this order and safety, but if
there were no order and safety, civilization could not develop. The inventor could not
invent, the scientist could not make any discovery and the artist could not make beautiful
things. In fact order and safety are as important for us as the air. Secondly, modern
civilization has freed man from the fear of pain. Today, men are ill much less often. Also
illness is no longer as painful as it used to be. Without good health, a man cannot enjoy
anything or achieve anything. It is true that many men did great things in life in spite of their
2
bad health, but they would have done better if they had enjoyed better health. Today, men
and women enjoy better health. Therefore, they enjoy life better. Thirdly, our civilization is
more secure than any of the previous civilizations. Previous civilizations were limited. They
were surrounded by uncivilized people. These people attacked them again and again and
destroyed them. But modern civilization is free from that danger. Fourthly, modern
civilization has made the world a single whole. Every country of the world has become
dependent on the other country for its needs. The food that we eat comes from all over the
world.
