MATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING (INTERNAL USE FOR SUBJECT BAA3713: HYDROLOGY & WATER RESOURCES) Suraya Binti Romali culty of Civil Engineering & Earth Resources iti Malaysia Pahang I BAAS71S HYDROLOGY & WATE soURCES | 27225. = Course Outeome (COs); Explain and analyze the elements in woler resources planning such as the economic and financial feasibility of engineefing projects and computation of water requirement for ination Learning Outcomes: + Elaborate the elements in water resources engineering 9.1. Introduction ‘The management and control of our waler resources requires the conception, planning, and execution of designs to make use of the water or avoid damage from too much water. The professional field of water resources engineering would cover the problem solving, and tulfiling the needs associated with municipal water supply, industrial and agricultural water supply and use, water quality in streams and aquifer, erosion and sedimentation, protection of water, ecosystem, and other natural resources, recreation, navigation, hydroelectric power generation, storm drainage and flood damage mitigation. 9.2. The Future of Water-Resources Engineering Modern civilization fs far more dependent on water than were chvlization of the Past. The development of civilization has increased the importance of water resources engineering, and there is no prospect of a deciine of activities in this field in the foreseeable future, The water resources engineering of the future will find themselves deeply involved with new tactinology and riew concepts. Reclamation of wastewater, weather modification, land management ta improve water yiold, and new water saving techniques in all areas of water use are topes of increasing interest and research, Water resources engineering and management involves peoplo, ratural esources, and infrastructure. Water resources are integrally link to the land resources and environmental condition. in meeting the waterrelated needs of society, the responsibilty of water resources professional would include the formulation and implementation of water resource management strategies and Planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of water infrastructure The water related (hydraulics) infrastructure of an urban area, rural, or river basin include: aie 0 ea BAAI713 HYDRO! Water distribution networks vi. _ Wastewater management system vii. Flood damage reduction measures vil. Various other manmade facilities Since water related needs and jssues are broad, complex, and crucial to economic/social development and environmental protection, naturally water resources engineering and management are interdisciplinary. In order to do work Successfully, water resources engineers should be able to work with other stakeholders, ike politician, economist, lawyers, urban planners, agricultural scientist, and other professionals from various other scientific and engineering disciplines, as well as waler users and the public, Table 9.4: Description of the purposes and types of work ___Resources Development Elements | Water Resources | Development Puiposes Types of works/Measures | | = Slenents eee Flood damage prevenlion or | Dam, storage woacivoly levees, ‘eduction ‘ood wail, chan — Protection of economic Nod pumping stations, in development | Flood Gontrot_ | — Conservation storage Por, load feree: | River regulation | — Recharging groundwater ~ Water supply — Development of power | iS =“ Agriculture production — r Jams, Teserve ¥ Roreste weer sien curl i rd puting i lerigation arens) ‘eed conta | stem, drainage facies, i far | Provision of power for | Bam; reseivar, penstocks, Hydroelectric economic developmont and Fee ;ansmission fine, = | improved living standards ‘Transportation of goods end Navigation passengers, Pe eh tatitta Ds — peels
