Grade and Topic: Sixth Grade Social Studies Length of Lesson: 45 minutes – 3 days

CENTRAL FOCUS:

In this lesson students will be in groups, researching the accomplishments of ancient Greeks. Prior to this lesson, students
will have already mastered previous standards which required them to develop a deep understanding of ancient Greek
culture and religion. This standard builds upon their knowledge of Greek history and the influence many Greeks had on
the world today.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

ISTE Standards

 2. Communication and collaboration - Students use digital media and environments to communicate and
work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning
of others.
 3. Research and information fluency - Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information.
 6. Technology operations and concepts - Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology
concepts, systems, and operations.

LESSON OBJECTIVE(S):

 Given access to technology, students will research their assigned historical figure or accomplishment and create a
PowerPoint slide with their groups to present to the class with complete accuracy.

MONITORING STUDENT LEARNING - FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS:

 Summative: The student’s PowerPoint slides will be graded for accuracy

 Summative: The group presentation will be graded.
 Formative: Teacher observations during research time.
 Formative: The student handout will be observed for participation.

MATERIALS:

 Class Handouts
 Laptops
 PowerPoint Class PowerPoint - Ancient Greece.pptx
 Internet access to:
o https://www.biography.com/people
o https://www.thoughtco.com/ancient-greek-scientists-inventions-and-discoveries-120966
 Projector and screen
Technology Integration

Students will use the internet resources listed above, and more, to research their assigned figures or accomplishments in
their groups. They will write down the information they find on their handout, and then they will put that information into
a PowerPoint slide. On the third day, students will present their slides to the class. This incorporates both online research
and PowerPoint to create a technology involved lesson.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

 What are the key concepts/ideas for the lesson?

The main idea for this lesson is to learn about ancient Greek accomplishments and influencers who have had an impact on
the way we see the world today, and how our world is different because of them.

 What is the academic language (e.g. vocabulary, language functions, and discourse) that must be
considered in this lesson?

Vocabulary: Greece, Ancient

 How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?

Previous lessons have focused on the influence of Ancient Greek culture and religion and how they have impacted our
world. This lesson requires students to use that knowledge while researching their assigned people or accomplishments.

 How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?

After this lesson, we will be moving on to the influence of ancient Rome. Knowing all about ancient Greece will help
students understand how Rome was developed and influenced by the past. Students will also be able to begin comparing
and contrasting the different ancient civilizations and their impact on the modern world.

 Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments?

Students who struggle to do online research due to lack of skill or behavior issues will be given a list of websites to use
and where to find certain information to make it easier for them. Groups will also be staggered so that there is a balance of
advanced and low performing students. This will provide support for the below average students. Finally, groups that may
have more below average students will be given less people to research.

 What connections will you make to the cultural, personal, and community assets of your students?

Students can apply the information they learn to their current lives. They will be able to discover how much of their local
and global community was influenced by ancient Greece.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Day One

Introduction: To begin the lesson, the teacher will review the past week’s lessons over ancient Greece briefly to
measure student’s memories. Then, the teacher will explain that everyone is going to be placed into groups for a
research project over ancient Greece and that they will have two days to research. They will be presenting on the
third day. (5 minutes)

Procedures:
 The teacher will put an image on the board that shows students which groups they will be in. Students will then
get into their 6 groups of 4. Once students are in their groups, the teacher will have one group at a time go up to
the front and get their assigned laptops. While students are getting their laptops, the teacher will distribute class
handouts. The grading rubric will be stapled to the back of every handout so that students know what they must
do to get a good grade. (2-4 minutes)
 The teacher will then have the class PowerPoint up on the board for everyone to see. The students will listen as
the teacher explains that they will first be researching their topic and recording information on their handout. They
will then put the information they find into the class PowerPoint according to directions. These instructions are
listed on the second slide of the PowerPoint. After explaining the instructions, the teacher will have students open
the PowerPoint on their laptops. The teacher will also display the second slide of the PowerPoint on the board for
everyone to see. (3 minutes)
 Students will begin researching their topics in their groups. The teacher will observe the class to ensure that
everyone is on topic and using appropriate sources. The teacher will also answer any questions. (30 minutes)

Closure: The teacher will ask all students to stop working and save their progress in the PowerPoint slide. The
students will then be asked to put away their laptops and place their handouts in a bin on top of the laptop cart.

Day Two

Introduction: To begin the lesson, the teacher will go over the instructions again and remind everyone that they
must finish today because they will be presenting the next day. Then, the students will get back into their groups
from the previous day. (2 minutes)

Procedures:
 Once students are in their groups, the teacher will have one group at a time go up to the front and get their
assigned laptops. While students are getting their laptops, the teacher will distribute class handouts. (2-4 minutes)
 The teacher will have students open the PowerPoint on their laptops. The teacher will also display the second
slide of the PowerPoint on the board for everyone to see.

Day Three

Introduction: The students will be asked to get into their groups and the teacher will have the PowerPoint pulled
up. The teacher will also have the order of presenters listed on the board. (2 minutes)

Procedures:
 The first group to present will go to the front of the class and the teacher will let them know when to start. They
will have 5-6 minutes to present their topics. The teacher will be observing the presentations and grading them
based on the rubric. (30 minutes)

Closure: Once every group has presented, the teacher will answer any questions and have a short discussion over
what the students liked and dislike about the project. (5 minutes)
MODIFICATIONS:

 Students will be placed in mixed groups so that there will be more advanced students to help out the ones who
have not yet mastered previous standards.
 If there is a group that has more lower achieving students in it then they will be assigned the easier topics.
 Groups who finish early or excel with this task will be encouraged to look up further information on their topics
and use that information in their presentations. They could also begin to practice presenting so that everyone is on
the same page within their group.
 Students who struggle to use technology will be given a list of resources to stick to which will ensure that they
finish on time.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

 Class PowerPoint and Student Work Sample: Class PowerPoint - Ancient Greece.pptx
 The class handouts are attached below. Students who research people will receive a different handout than those
who research other topics.
 Presentation Rubric: MyRubric.xls
