Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of
deep darkness a light has dawned.
A Light in the Darkness
In our hearts we know the world is shrouded in darkness. We see the ravaging
effects of sin on our world in the suffering of people everywhere. Each of us has a
God-shaped hole in our heart and many don’t recognize their desperate need for
salvation from the sin that reigns within them. People busy themselves with
everything other than God, desperately trying to find something that will fill that hole
only God can fill. They do not recognize that their sin has inextricably separated them
from our almighty creator who is the source of all that is good. Our God wishes to
change this and heal us and restore us.
But only an outside light can save us from the darkness within us. We need a
light that can pierce through the great darkness of our world because sin and darkness
have overwhelmed us and infected everyone. The scriptures say that none of us are
without sin and so we cannot save ourselves. Therefore, we need a savior. And so the
unapproachable God, who to even gaze upon the light of his face would destroy us,
came to earth to save us.
But interestingly our savior; this bane of the evil didn’t come as knight to do
physical battle with the evil forces of this world, but rather he came as a newborn
child. The weapon he wielded was his sacrificial love. Jesus Christ didn’t come to
destroy evil with a sword but instead, he came to destroy evil by subjecting himself to
it. He came to give his life over to evil, to face it, and suffer it in our place.
Christ’s coming is so special because it opened the doors to salvation by a new
kind relationship with God – an everlasting friendship. God come down from the
heavenly realm to be with us, suffer with us, and to die with us and for us. Through a
relationship with Christ we can intimately know God and love God and be loved by God
when before, sin separated us from God. Paradoxically, our spiritual battle between
good and evil isn’t won by the kind of war we might imagine. Rather, it is won by living
like Christ and with Christ as a light to the world by our love, sacrifice, and selfless
service to a people who are lost in the darkness.

CALVARY-ASBURY THANKS THE LIONS!
Thank you to the Lions Club for their generous
donation toward our church's Trunk or Treat
activity. The donation of the Lions Club and
donations from other individuals made it
possible for us to provide free food and
drinks for our community families during this
event, allowing us the opportunity to share the
love of Christ with them.

FOOD PANTRY DECEMBER 2018

Many thanks to all who once again helped to make the Thanksgiving food
drive and distribution a great success for the Sudlersville Food Pantry! 87
families were the happy recipients of the food packages which included a bag
of staple groceries, as well as a turkey and all the fixings for a Thanksgiving
meal. A big THANK YOU TO St Paul’s for providing 50 turkeys! We were also
blessed to partner with both Holden’s Chapel whose congregants provided
about 40 turkeys and other food, as well. Many individuals and area
businesses provided both monetary, turkeys and other food donations. We
were able to pick up a truckload of food from the Feed a Family warehouse on
Kent Island as well.
Four schools, namely, Sudlersville Elementary and Middle, Church Hill
Elementary, and QACHS conducted food drives to benefit our Pantry and
each of them did a great job. Kudos to their staff, students and parents! SES
provided lots this year as the staff members divided into 2 teams for a
competition to benefit the Pantry. Centreville Middle School is still
conducting their drive until the end of the month, and we will receive some of
their collection as well.
Lastly, but by no means the least, a big thanks goes to the Crew Venture
Club who helped pack the bags for distribution, and the many volunteers who
spent time over the last month picking up, sorting, bagging, and distributing.
Your assistance was invaluable to us, but most of all we were able to shine the
light of Jesus out into the community through acts of generosity, compassion
and love for our neighbors in need. In the words of Charles Dickens’
Tiny Tim, “God bless us, everyone.”
