Greetings from SASTRA University!

We are very happy to invite you to join Distance Education Programme of SASTRA University.
The Directorate of Distance Education was established in 2002 to provide high quality online and distance
education to those who could not otherwise enter the portals of conventional education system. SASTRA
University has always been in the forefront of higher education and all our professional programmes
offered through conventional mode have got recognition and national acclaim. This is possible
because of highly qualified teachers and excellent infrastructural facilities available at SASTRA.

The Distance Education programmes offered by SASTRA will address the individual needs of the
distance learner and make this self-learning experience a wholly satisfying one. This University adopts a
transparent admission policy, affordable programme fee, study centre facility and academic inputs from
experienced faculty. Multimedia facilities are also available with us to enhance self-learning.

THE UNIVERSITY
Shanmugha College of Engineering has been established by its founding fathers in the year 1984 and
was renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA). It has
become a University in April 2001 under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act1956 fo r
its outstanding contribution to the growth of higher education especially professional education.
Its unique blend of academic excellence, real world experience and moral values has earned
SASTRA national and international recognition.
SASTRA with over 9,186 students in the campus offers various high quality undergraduate and post
graduate programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Education, Management and Arts besides doctoral
programmes and has the state - of the - art laboratories, a well stocked library and one of the best computing
facilities. SASTRA has been reaccredited with A Grade (maximum grade) status by 3.54 points National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
With only 12% of the relevant age group (18-23) entering the portals of the higher education in the country,
SASTRA has felt a need to expand the provision of the higher education and established the
Directorate of Distance Education in collaboration with Distance Education Bureau (DEB) of UGC,
New Delhi to offer higher education through distance mode. Besides M..C..A, other innovative degree
programmes are offered in the Distance Mode.
OBJECTIVES
• To provide an alternative informal channel through distance learning mode for those who seek
higher education.
• To supplement the efforts of campus - based conventional higher education system.
• To provide a “Second Chance” to those who are not able to pursue higher education earlier.
• To f a c i l i t a t e updated knowledge and skills to those who are already employed including
in - service teachers.
• To identify and design innovative programmes to meet the local and global
manpower needs.

MASTER OF COMPUTER APPLICATIONS (DISTANCE MODE) Programme – An Introduction

The Master of Computer Applications Programme (MCA) of Distance Mode offered by SASTRA University
is one among the Professional Master programmes in Computer Science. The objective behind MCA is to
equip undergraduate science students with latest technologies, tools and applications in Information
Technology (IT) and to meet the ever-growing requirement of IT professionals and is also intended to
provide an opportunity to the science graduates to further their education qualification.

Applicants should have secured the minimum 50% of marks prescribed by the SASTRA University
consistently from 10th standard to graduation. Further, mathematics or statistics should have been one of the
subjects in their 12th and graduation level. The graduation programme must be a regular, three year course
with one of the following subjects’ mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, and computer science,
computer applications, information technology as main subjects and mathematics as an essential component
for all mains.

The entire programme is spread through the period of three years. The 3 year programme prescribed by
SASTRA University will be conducted through Distance mode.

Candidates of this programme will be getting a Study Kit which consists of 20 hours video lectures in DVD
format, power points and document files besides Books in hardcopy form for each course. Besides this Study
Kit, there are 20 hours of Personal Contact Programme (PCP) in each subject and video-conference based
teaching to the registrants of the programme. At the end of every year, there will be a paper-pen based
examination.

The third year will have a project work. 75% attendance in contact classes is compulsory for the candidates
to appear for the examination.

An MCA after B.Sc. will enhance the eligibility criteria for on-site project opportunities during their
employment, as the probability of successfully getting a visa is higher compared to a candidate with an
undergraduate science degree. Candidates will also be technically more qualified and competent to handle
more complex assignments, as the prescribed course curriculum is aligned with requirements of the industry.

1. Objectives of M.C.A. Programme

The M.C.A. (Distance Mode) programme of SASTRA focuses on making the applicants to acquire relevant
knowledge, skills and attitudes.

 To enable the registrant to understand the design of complex computer applications.


 To develop a strong foundation of computer applications and information technology.
 To enhance the registrant Skills to cope with the real-time applications.
 To enrich the Communication skills among the registrants.
 To develop a contemporary managerial ability to analyze, design, develop, deploy and to
maintain software projects.
2. Eligibility

Candidates should have successfully undergone the degree in 10+2+3 pattern of examinations with
Mathematics as a subject of study in +2 or in qualifying degree course.

2.1 Selection procedure


Selection to M.C.A distance mode programme in SASTRA will be done transparently
based on merit.

3. Duration of the programme


M.C.A. Programme is of three years duration. In any case, the programme will have to be
completed within a maximum period of five years after enrolment.

4. Medium of instruction
The medium of instruction for M..C..A.. Programme will be in English.

The study materials in the form of Books and DVDs are the programme materials for distance learning.
9. Teaching Methodology
The methodology of instruction is different from the conventional system. In distance learning, specific
emphasis is laid upon self-study and the learning process takes place with the help of study
materials. However, mode of instruction is through the following:
• Study materials. in the form of books and DVDs.
• Contact programmes are conducted at SASTRA University, Thanjavur (Headquarters).
10. Evaluation system
The scheme of evaluation system in M.C.A., programme will consist of the Term-end
University Examination. Scheme of evaluation for theory andpracticalcoursesis as follows:

11. Classification of Successful Candidates
The Numerical marks will be used for assessing the performance of the students

11.1. Provision for unsuccessful candidates


Candidates who are declared unsuccessful shall be permitted to appear for any failed courses at
subsequent examination(s) subject to the restriction of five years of the maximum expiry period.
If a candidate has missed any term-end University examination of a programme for any reason, he/
she may appear for the same in the subsequent Term-End University Examination.

12. Incomplete and Late Applications


Incomplete and late application forms, and also application forms furnishing false
information will be summarily rejected without any information to the candidate
concerned. Candidates are, therefore advised to fill up the relevant columns carefully and submit
the form to The Programme Incharge, MCA Programme (Distance Education), SASTRA
University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Pin Code: 613401 on or before the last date given in
the advertisement.
