Week 5 Assignment 1
Egress Design Compliance

Please label the missing dimensions or correct any wrong dimensions for each item. Compare the
ADAAG and ANSI codes for each element below. Cite the code reference numbers for both
references for each element and the most stringent dimensions found in your research.

1: Door Clearance Plans

The figure 4.4 from the codes book and table 404.2.4.1 in the ADAAG site was used to calculate the
doors and doorways dimensions. The ADAAG site gave more information on the dimensions.

2: Handrail/Guardrail Elevation

The figures 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 were used in the codes book and the 504 codes were used for the ADAAG
dimensions. Both codes were similar in the dimensions needed for the stairway.

3: Stair Nosing Elevation

Codes and Regulations

3

For this I used the figure 4.5 in the codes book and 504.5 in the ADAAG to find the dimensions. This
was a little harder to understand but I believe the rise can be no more than 7 and the tread no less
than 11 and the radius no more then 1.5 and no less and 1/2.

4: Stair Plan

I used figure 4.6 and 4.8 in the codes book and was not able to locate it in ADAAG. I believe I
misunderstand the dimensions needed for the particular stair plan, but I think its asking for the
distance between the rail and the wall, plus the dimension of the handrail at the end or landing.

Week 5 Assignment 2
Evaluating Floor Plan

1: What is the occupancy load for each Business tenant of the 10th Floor of the Tenant Building
shown in this assignment? (Show your calculations.) What is the occupancy load of the entire floor?
Is one exit stair enough for the whole floor? Why or why not?

Occupancy Occupant Occupant Load

Tenant
Classification Factor(s) (show full math)
Business 100 gross 3491/100= 34.91=35

#3

#4

Business 100 gross 2042/100= 20.42=20

#5

Total Floor 128

2: Is one exit stair enough for the whole floor? Why or why not?
No, it is not enough for the floor to have one stair exit. The occupancy load 1-500 requires a floor to
have 2 exits.

3: If two exit doors are required per tenant, could the separation between exits in each tenant be
correct? How do you know? Explain your answer for each tenant.

T1)100’-9” /2 = 50’-4.5”. no, it is not correct as there is only one door being shown where as it needs
2 doors that are 50’-4.5” away.
T2)84’-2” /2 = 42’- 1”. No, its not correct as the distance between 2 doors need to be 42’-1” away
and there is only 1 door.
T3)43’ /2 = 21.5’. This could possibly be correct. Although it is hard to tell. The distance between 2
doors should be 21.5’.
T4)64’-6” /2 = 32’- 3”. No this is not correct as there is only one door shown where this tenant needs
2 doors that are 32’-3” apart.
T5)102’-1” /2 = 51’- .5”. no this is not correct as it needs 2 doors that are 51’-.5” away and there is
only one door.

4: Confirm or deny whether or not it is permissible for any spaces occupied by any tenants to have
only one exit door. Explain your answer with supporting code compliance documentation.

Codes and Regulations

2

Yes it is permissible for a space occupied by any tenants to have only one exit door. Due to table
1015.1, the table states that any business occupancy can have one exit if the maximum occupant
load is less than 49.

5: What is the required Stair Width Egress for based on the business occupancy of this floor plan
(show math)? Does this plan comply?
128 x .3= 38.4 = 38”. Yes, this plan complies as the stair width is greater than the minimum
requirement.

6: What is the corridor egress width based on the business occupancy of this floor plan (show
math)? Does this plan comply?
44 inches minimum (Table 1018.2). Yes, this plan complies as each corridor is over 44 inches.

7: Notice the exit door alcove setback on the 10th Floor Tenant Plan is designed so that the door
does not open into the corridor. What are the minimum acceptable dimensions of the alcove
setback's width and depth required to produce this result? Please fill in the minimum requirements
for the blank dimension lines.

8: How many toilet, sinks and urinals would be needed for the Total Floor if all tenants were
Business occupancy classifications? Show all calculations.
35/2=18-25=-7 =1,1 18-40=-22=1,1
27/2=14-25=-11=1,1 14-40=-26=1,1

9: What would be the occupancy load of Tenants One and Two if each are reclassified as assembly
occupancies?

#5

Total Floor 481

Given the new classification of these two tenants, is the exit current stair run width of four feet wide
adequate to safely evacuate all the occupants of the 10th Floor in the event of an emergency?
Explain your answer.
481 x .3= 144.3= 144”. No the current stair run width is not wide enough for evacuations due to the
current width being less than 144”.

10: How many toilet, sinks and urinals would be needed for the Total Floor for the mixed Business &
Assembly occupancy classifications? Show all calculations.
233/2=117/75=1.56=2,2 117/200=.585= 1,1
