EXPERIMENT NO. 6
PREPARATION OF CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE SPECIMEN

Purpose:
To provide cylindrical concrete specimens for compression test.

Standard Reference:
AASHTO R 39 Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Laboratory
AASHTO T 23 Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
ASTM C 31 Standard Practices For Making and Curing Test Specimens In The Field

Significance:
Compressive strength is the most critical performance standard applied to concrete on a construction
project. It is very important for the tests to accurately represent the concrete delivered and placed on the
project.

Concrete test cylinders are used to measure the compressive strength of concrete delivered to a project
and to ensure the concrete meets the specifications of the job.

Apparatus:
6” x 12” Cylindrical Molds, Tamping Rod, Trowel

Sample:
The sample of concrete from which the specimens are made shall be in accordance with AASHTO
Standard T 141 (Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete).

Test Procedure:
1. Place the mold on a flat, level, rigid surface, free of vibration and other disturbances.
2. Form the test sample by placing concrete in the mold in three layers of approximately equal
volume. Rod each layer with 25 strokes of the tamping rod. For layers 2 and 3, the rod shall
penetrate about 25mm into the underlying layer. Distribute the strokes uniformly over the cross-
section of the mold.
3. Close the voids left by the tamping rod by lightly tapping the sides of the mold 10 – 15 times.
4. After the top layer has been rodded, strike off the top with a float or trowel to insure a flat and level
surface.
5. Store the specimen undisturbed for 24 hours in such a way as to prevent moisture loss and to
maintain the specimen within a temperature range of 15 ºC to 27 ºC.
6. Remove the test specimen from the mold between 20 to 48 hours and transfer carefully to the
place of curing.
7. Place the specimen in the water bath and store for the designated curing period.
8. After the specimen has been cured for the proper length of time, remove and cap.
