ABSTRACT

The solar still integrated with a heat exchanger is a

very useful system for the distillation of waste hot water
available from thermal power plant, chemical laboratories,

etc. 'Ihis comnunication deals with the performance-analysis

of such a system. The analysis is based on transient

approach. As the waste hot water temperature is usually

very high wtr the opersting tenpemture range of the solar

still, telrperaturedependent heat transfer mechanism has

also been considered in analysing the performance of the

proposed system. A system efficiency incorporating

efficiencies of both still and the heat exchanger is intro-

duced to clepict the system performance. Explicit expressions

have been derived for the terrperatures of tievarious

conponcnts of the proposed system. For appreciation of the

analytical results, numerical calculations were made using

meteorological parsmeters for a typical day in Delhi. Further,

effects of both still as well as heat-exchanger parameters
on the system performance have been studied in detail. The

results of the investigations are useful for optimization

of the various parameters of the proposed, system for optimal

performance.
