All rocks are in different classes since they

are made of different minerals. They are also
created in different ways. These classes are
sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.

Chapter 1: Sedimentary
Sedimentary rocks are made from pieces of
sand, shells, and other small bits of material.

There are two kinds of sedimentary rocks. They

are called clastic and chemical.

Clastic rocks are made from pieces of rocks

that have broken off from wind and rain and
then stuck together. They are made up of the
minerals quartz, feldspars, and clay.

Chemical rocks are made from solids that

formed in a chemical liquid. They are made up of
the minerals halite, calcium, and gypsum.

Chapter 2: Metamorphic
Metamorphic rocks are made of rocks that
already existed but have changed into a
new rock.

There are two kinds of metamorphic rocks.

They are foliated and non-foliated.

Foliated rocks have layers or bands

because they were made by pressure and
heat. They are made of the minerals micas,
feldspars, and quartz.

Non-foliated rocks do not have layers or

bands. They are made of the same minerals
as foliated rocks.

Igneous rocks are made from the cooling
of lava or magma.

There are two kinds of igneous rocks. They

Intrusive rocks are made from large

crystals that were created underground.
they are made of the minerals feldspars,
silica, quartz, and magnesium.

Extrusive rocks are made from small

crystals that have cooled above ground.
They are made of the same minerals as
intrusive rocks.
