NATIONAL TAIWAN UNIVERSITY THEORY OF STRUCTURES (I)

Department of Civil Engineering Spring 2014

Midterm Examination: May 1 (Thursday), 2014
Time: 10:20-12:20

1. Classify the structures in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) as statically determinate, statically indeterminate,
or unstable. If statically indeterminate, specify the degree of indeterminancy. (10 %)

2. As shown in Fig. 2, determine the reactions at supports A and D and draw the moment diagram
for member AB. (14 %)

3. Considering the truss shown in Fig. 3, calculate the reactions at A and B and the axial force of
members 1, 2 and 3 and indicate whether these forces are tensile or compressive. (16 %)

Fig. 3

4. With reference to Fig. 4, draw the influence lines of the following:

(a) VB; (b) MD; (c) VD- (the shear force at the point slightly left to point D). (15 %)

Fig. 4
5. Fig. 5 shows a truss and the influence line of the axial force of member BG (unit: kN).
(a) Determine the maximum compressive force developed in member BG due to a moving
vehicle as shown; express your answer in terms of the value a. (10%)
(b) Find the value of a. (5%)

Fig. 5

6. Consider the building frame subjected to vertical loads as shown in Fig. 6. Assume the inflection
points of each beam is located a distance of a from both ends as shown. Assuming a =0.8m,
analyze the frame and plot the moment diagram for the columns. (10%)

7. Consider the building frame subjected to lateral loads as shown in Fig. 7. Assume the inflection
point of each member is located at its midpoint. Apply the cantilever method to analyze the frame
and then plot the moment diagram on the frame. Please plot the moment diagram for the beams in
one figure and that for the columns in another figure. (20%)
