●Configuration of Each Component

― Magnetic coil

Magnetic coil has two-turn coil, and to identify its polarity, above side of coil is colored in red. When the
surge arrester discharges, the discharging current magnetizes a magnetic-link through a magnetizing
coil.

― Magnetic-link

The discharging current magnetizes the magnetic-link and remains in it as residual magnetization. The
strength of residual magnetization is a function of peak value of the discharging current.
For measuring the discharging current by using the magneto-meter, the peak value of the discharging
current is available.
As shown in Fig.4, magnetic-link has a laminated layer structure with multiple magnetic sheets and
positioned in the protector tube. It has water resistant.
To identify its polarity, one side of outer tube is colored in red. Insert the magnetic-link its red part
above and match the red part of the magnetizing coil. If not, the polarity undefined and fails to measure
correctly.

― Magneto meter

Magneto meter provides the magnetic needle with scale dial on the synthetic resins with two cylindrical
holes of (A) (upper side) and (B) (lower side) as shown in Fig.5. Hole(A) and (B) has different scale of
calibration curve.
Depending on the magnetizing strength of the magnetic-link, insert the magnetic-link into either of the
cylindrical holes and measure the deflection of the magnetic needle.
To identify its polarity, one side of hall is colored in red. Insert the magnetic-link its red part with the red
part of the magneto-meter. If not, the polarity undefined and fails to measure correctly.

―Demagnetizing coil

Demagnetizing coil used for demagnetize the magnetic-link. The structure is shown in Fig.6.
The magnetic-link is inserted into the cylindrical hole on the synthetic resins built-in the hollow
cylindrical coil. Demagnetization is carried out by pulling out the magnetic-link gradually while adding
an alternating current (AC 110V) to the coil.

●How to measure the discharge current

1. To measure the discharge current, pull out the magnetic-link from the magnetizing coil and insert
into the lower hole(B) on the magneto-meter for matching each red part.
2. Before insert the magnetic-link into hole(B), adjust the magneto-meter position so that N polarity
side of the magnetic needle on the magneto-meter shows “0” on the scale dial.
3. Read the deflection angle and direction of the magnetic needle. If the deflection angle is too small to
read, reinsert the magnetic-link into the upper hole(A) and read the deflection of the magnetic
needle. The discharge current is obtained for using the deflection angle as follows.

●Identify the discharge current from the magneto-meter calibration curve

There is an example of identifying the discharge current from the deflection angle.
Fig.7 shows the case of using hole(B), deflection angle indicates 20 degree correspond with
approximately 400A of peak value of discharge current. To see more accurate discharge current,
reinsert hole(A) as follows.

peak value of discharge current.

●About demagnetize of the magnetic-link

Though the magnetic-link is magnetized because of discharge current, it can be demagnetized by

using the demagnetizing coil.
1. Connect the power supply cable (AC 110V, more than 1A) to the demagnetizing coil terminal as a
preparation and connect the power supply cable to AC outlet (AC110V), turn on the power switch of
the demagnetizing coil.
2. Insert the magnetic-link into the hole of the demagnetizing coil within 5 minutes at one time.
Pull out the magnetic-link horizontally until it leaves by more than 1 meter away from the
demagnetizing coil.
3. Confirm that the deflection of the magnetic needle shows “0” on magneto-meter. If not, continue to
demagnetize.
Please note when demagnetizing the magnetic-link, do not turn off the demagnetizing coil in a halfway
of operation.
