Article Info ABSTRACT

Article history: Flower and Bird Market has been through a lot of quality decreases phisically
and functionally. These decreases included the damage of Brantas River and
market building lack in sirculation, accessibility, facility, etc. These decreases
needs a few improvements. Improvements are going to be made by developing
existing potential at Flower and Bird Market which is the Brantas River and
Urban Heritage value. In order to develop those two potential then Eco-

1. INTRODUCTION
The Flower Market and Bird Market were established in 1995. The market is located 300 m from Tugu
Square. This market was formed from the year 1960 with the existence of several groups of bird traders selling around
Jl.Brawijaya. This market then grows into a market that sells other animal animals such as ornamental fish, chicken
hamsters, cats, etc. and also sells a variety of plants. This increasingly attracts visitors to visit the Flower Market and
Bird Market (budpar.malangkota.co.id/pasar-burung-qsplendidq-malang/).
Flower Market and Bird Market are divided into 2 parts: Bird Market and Flower Market. Although named
Bird Market, this market sells animals other than birds. In the current design Market there are several aspects that
require improvement. One of them is the circulation in the market that has not distinguished the circulation of
pedestrians and motor vehicles. Unfavorable circulatory arrangements on the market will reduce the value of
convenience and safety in shopping and also create an messy impression on the market. The lack of circulation
arrangement also has an impact on accessibility to the market. Besides the problem of market circulation, another
problem is related to parking zones. The market does not yet have an effective and adequate parking zone. So that
visitors vehicles are parked irregularly inside and outside the market and this causes congestion at certain hours of the
hour. This deficiency needs to be improved because a good and effective circulation arrangement on the market is one
of the basic criteria in market design (Suardana, 2007). In addition, other problems arising in the Flower Market and
Bird Market is the treatment of river flow. There are many residential area built too close to the river. These residential
area buildings also do not protect the physical condition of the river but worsen. As with the garbage disposal around
the river. This can damage the physical condition and flow of the river. The physical condition of this settlement itself
can be fairly rundown and does not add to the aesthetic value of river flow. With good management and arrangement,
the residential area can have maximum space without disturbing and giving bad effect to river flow. Merchandise on
the flower and bird market, especially the bird market also has not received maximum health protection. Other
problems that arise in the Flower Market and Bird Market are environmental issues such as sanitation, waste, layout
of merchant kiosks and porch
The problems mentioned above need to be improved because this market is a large market which considered
as the center of animals and plants trades in Malang. This market is also located in the urban heritage area that is often
visited by local and foreign tourists. In addition to being an object located in the Urban heritage area, this market is
also located on the banks of the Brantas River. So the area of the Flower Market and Bird Market has a fairly extreme
soil contours. The river border areas often do not receive more attention. So that floods and landslides are often a
problem that is often experienced in the riverside. It can also be a potential in designing. This river can be a very
interesting element to add aesthetic value in landscape planning of Flower Market and Bird Market. The location of
Flower Market and Bird Market located on the banks of Brantas River trigger the utilization of steep slopes along the
Brantas River border. With it the abandoned spaces on the banks of the Brantas River can be utilized not only for
economic and social purposes but also for environmental protection. Namely by optimizing the use of Brantas River
banks as a public space (Rachman, 2013).
2. RESEARCH METHOD
Design method applied for Flower Market and Bird Market Redesign refer to redesign phase from Eko
Budiharjo which included 4 step:
1. Data Collection
2. Building Evaluation
3. Selection of Aspets
4. Design
In Flower Market and Bird Market Redesign, the 4th phase of redesign which is design, are combined with
Architecture Programming by Donna P. Duerk, a design methods based on issue. Analysis and Shyntesis using
Architecture Programming by Donna P. Duerk will be done in following steps:
1. Facts : Problems found during process of design
2. Issue : Issues builts from facts
3. Goal (in this case using design criteria of Eco-Cultural Architecture)
4. Performance Requirement : Actions needs to be done to solve issues according to goals
5. Concept

3. RESULT AND ANALYSIS
As mentioned before, the first phase of redesign is Data Collection which included current design data,
architectural theory and standard for flower and bird market, and study about eco-cultural architecture. As for the
second phase which is building eveluation is done through interview and questionnaire. The third phase of redesign
is selection of aspect. This phase is done right after the evaluation phase. Its done by choosing the right reaction
towards problems emerges during the evaluation. The result of eveluation and selection of phase is as follow:

CONCLUSSION
Redesign of Flower and Bird Market in Splendid Malang City with Eco-Cultural Architecture is emphasizing it
local potential and uniqueness. In the redesign of flower and bird market result of analysis is taken from eco-cultural
architecture design criteria: human feature, balance, and material. These design criteria is used to solve market’s
ecological issue such as river conservacy and maintaining site’s original contour, and cultural issue such as urban
heritage conservacy and maintaining object as flower and bird market that can function adequately.
Redesign has few phase need to be done before the design phase which is evaluation phase. In this case,
evaluation is done by interview and questionnaire. The evaluation result then processed by determine the right
design solution for the issue. However, in analysis phase current issues of the market and discussed again by
determine performance requirement according to eco-cultural architecture goal.
The result of analysis based on issues is divided into two part: site building. Each part has 2 category based on
eco-cultural design criteria which is: space (human fetaures), form (balance), and material (material). The design of
flower and bird market uses these categories in concept and final design.
