 How does the Code of Ethics apply to my professional life?

In any form of profession, there is always a code of ethics an employer or

employee must follow. This is to make certain that the job done was made in the
righteous manner. Civil engineering isn’t an exemption on that. Our job entails so
many aspects. It includes safety of the people you build your building for, safety of
the people working for you, and trust of your clients to name a few. You will always
face a dilemma in which you might consider in compromising the aspects mentioned
above. Having a code of ethics will help you reach a right decision to which you will
not have to compromise the safety of your building or your clients’ interests. As a Civil
Engineer, you must always bare in mind that compromising is good in negotiations,
but not on your ethical beliefs. Always stick to what your code of ethics gave you.
Remember, we Civil Engineers were strained painstakingly so that the ones who gets
through are those who have proven good skills and credentials. It is a privilege to
become a Civil Engineer, so in return you must give your outmost work, and that is
attained through following the Code of Ethics.

 How does ethics apply to my personal life, outside of my professional life?

My moral values include honesty, compassion, and piousness. I follow that in

every aspect of my life, whatever and wherever my duties are. An engineer from a
different field once told me, “Engineering is a profession that has no retirement.”
Once you earned that title, that is your way of life, twenty four hours a day, seven
days a week. You accepted its responsibilities and other form of obligations the title
entails. So, my professional ethics is along with my moral values. To be honest, to be
compassionate and to be pious. I believe that practice makes perfect. If these moral
values are practiced as my way of life, my professional life is adjusted in that manner
too. When you entered this world of profession, a series of concepts and
responsibilities were introduced to you, and you studied that throughout your five
years of stay. The learning and obligations never ceased when you attained your title.
It continues on, it becomes a big part of you. That is why ethics must be practiced as
your way of life and not just inside your profession. Conform your personal life around
it. Because once a Civil Engineer, always a Civil Engineer.
