That is exactly what the CB Sustainable Travel Team did recently.

The team were itching to try the new cycle hire scheme and with
stands just outside the office they were ready to ride within minutes.

about using it again. Some of the team are even considering using the
bikes to replace part of their usual commute by public transport.

Copenhagen
CB’s cycling consultant Philip Loy undertook a 300-mile cycle
ride across Denmark in June to join the Velo-city international
cycling conference in Copenhagen. As usual, there was a wealth
of information on know-how, projects, and general initiatives, and
the conference had a wide range of practitioners from all over the
world. Copenhagen itself was a case study in cycle provision. Philip
says: “the extent to which cycle tracks had been built was impressive
but the most interesting aspect of their network wasn’t so much
what was built as the way drivers behaved at junctions, which was
exemplary! Everyone understood how the road network was supposed
to work and there was a high degree of compliance by all road users.”
Philip concluded the conference by meeting some future clients of CB
in Cyprus (see article overleaf).

Philip has been working with a project team at Sustrans which has been
investigating the feasibility of a cycle hire scheme for the University
of Birmingham. Centro the regional transport authority are also
stakeholders as they see this as a pilot project for other parts of the city.

Philip says: “It’s great to work with Sustrans again and as cycle hire is
becoming more widespread, it has been really useful to ascertain the type
of scheme that is relevant to a situation like a university which generates
a huge amount of trips. For example, staff and students have differing
requirements, and a campus scheme would be very different to a public
municipal bike hire scheme.”
