Open defecation in Maharashtra to invite spot fine of Rs 500
Maharashtra government has imposed a spot fine of Rs 500 for open defecation. Also spot fine is
levied for littering, spitting and urinating in public places.
i. The urban development department issued a Government Resolution (GR) that has bestowed
the municipal corporations and councils with power to issue spot fines on people and institutions
as per the Solid Waste Management Act, 2016.

Maharashtra decides to set up board for 'Non-English' medium schools


On January 5, 2018, Maharashtra State Education Minister, Vinod Tawde stated that
Maharashtra State Government has decided to form an education board for non-English medium
schools.
i. Mr. Tawde stated that an international education board will be formed to prepare syllabus for
non-English medium schools in Maharashtra.
ii. In the first phase, 100 selected Marathi schools will follow the new syllabus.
iii. Besides, Mr. Tawde also assured to look into the issue of reducing non-teaching tasks of
teachers (such as Census Survey and election duty) in the coming days.

Maharashtra to grade performance of its 7.5 lakh govt employees


Maharashtra State Government’s General administration department under Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a Performance-linked marking system for 7.5 lakh
state government employees.The new 100-point performance marking system, will take
into account subjective as well as objective evaluation of an employee’s performance during
the year.
ii. Out of the 100 marks, 60 marks will be assigned for performance on objective parameters,
such as speed of completing the given work, punctuality, attentiveness etc, while the remaining
40 marks will be given for subjective parameters such as quality of file notings, contribution in
policy making, articulation of thought etc.

19th India International Watch and Clock Fair "Samaya Bharati 2018" held in Mumbai
19th India International Watch and Clock Fair "Samaya Bharati 2018" was held in Mumbai,
Maharashtra from January 25, 2018 to January 28, 2018.
i. The fair was inaugurated by Amruta Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Vice President of Axis
Bank.
ii. It was organised by India's leading watch and clock magazine "Trade Post" under the
auspices of Watch Trade Federation.

Maharashtra cabinet approves 1% quota for orphans in govt jobs


On January 17, 2018, Maharashtra State Cabinet approved one per cent reservation for
orphans in government jobs under general category.
i. Maharashtra State Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde stated that this
decision will help to rehabilitate orphan children and secure their future.
ii. She said that as caste of orphans is not known, they cannot be included in a specific category
and thus 1% reservation has been provided in General Category.

Maharashtra approves Rs 4000-cr for climate resilient agriculture project


On January 17, 2018, Maharashtra State Government approved Rs 4000 crore – Nanaji
Deshmukh Krishi Sanjivani Yojna.

i. Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjivani Yojna is aimed at promoting climate-resilient agriculture in
5142 villages across 15 districts of Maharashtra.
ii. Under this yojana, efforts will be made to improve soil quality, bringing in necessary changes in
the crop pattern as per the availability of water in a particular region and develop food grain
varieties which can sustain climate variations

Maharashtra bans sale of tobacco at shops selling FMCG items


On 24th January 2018, Maharashtra government announced that, it has banned the sale of
tobacco at stores that sell Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) items.
i. The ban has been implemented to prevent youngsters getting addicted to tobacco products.
ii. Maharashtra has become the first state to implement this ban. It had issued a notification
regarding this ban on 9th January 2018.

Maharashtra Government comes up with helipad policy


Maharashtra State Government has framed a comprehensive helipad policy which lays down strict
guidelines for helipads, their location and other procedures to be followed.
i. This policy has been framed by the aviation department of Maharashtra Government’s
General Administration Department. Need for such policy was felt owing to a series of near-
mishaps of helicopters ferrying Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during last one year.
ii .One of the key rule to be followed is that helipads should be located close to cities but away
from densely populated areas.

President of India Inaugurates Economic Democracy Conclave in Maharashtra


On January 14, 2018, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the ‘Economic
Democracy Conclave’ at Thane, Maharashtra.
i. This conclave has been organised by Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini.
ii. Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini is a charitable organization working in the domain of training of
social-political activist.
iii. The objective of the conclave is to serve as a platform for young entrepreneurs and self-
employed individuals and provide them motivation, mentoring and networking opportunities.
iv. On January 14, 2018, President Kovind also visited the Global Vipassana Pagoda in
Mumbai.

Johnson & Johnson partners with Maharashtra government on health interventions


On 11th January 2018, Maharashtra Health department and Johnson and Johnson signed a MoU to
train rural midwives and social health activists regarding tuberculosis and maternal and infant
mortality.
i. The MoU was signed between Maharashtra state government and Johnson and Johnson in the

presence of Deepak Sawant, Maharashtra Health Minister.


ii. Nearly 10,000 auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) and 60,000 Accredited Social Health Activists
(ASHAs) in Maharashtra will be trained by Johnson and Johnson at the districts are Nanded,
Beed, Jalgaon, Dhule, Aurangabad, Jalna, Gadchirol, Hingoli and Nadurbar. Maternal and
infant mortality rate is higher in these nine districts.
iv. They will also be trained to treat just born babies in the “golden minute” and protect them
from infections. This agreement is valid for 2 years.

Maharashtra bags best tableau award


Maharashtra State’s tableau has been adjudged as the ‘Best Tableau’ at the 69th Republic
Day parade held at Rajghat, Delhi on January 25, 2018.The award for best tableau was
presented by Union Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman on January 28, 2018.
Assam and Chhattisgarh won the second and third prize respectively.

Former Maharashtra Minister Madhukarrao Kimmatkar passed away


On 3rd January 2018, Madhukarrao Kimmatkar, former Maharashtra Minister passed away
due to brief illness in Nagpur.
i. Madhukarrao Kimmatkar was 86 years old. He is survived by his wife, son and four daughters.
ii. He was affected by a pneumonia attack. He died at a private hospital in Nagpur. He had worked
as the minister of state of Finance, Labour and Law and Judiciary.

Maharashtra senior BJP leader NS Pharande passes away


On 16th January 2018, Narayan Sadashiv Pharande, senior BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)
leader and former MLC, died following a cardiac arrest at MJM Hospital, in Pune,
Maharashtra.
i. Narayan Sadashiv Pharande was 78 years old. He was admitted to MJM Hospital several days
back after he suffered from intra-cranial bleeding and paralysis.

BJP MP Chintaman Wanaga passes away


On 30th January 2018, Chintaman Wanaga, senior BJP MP from Maharashtra, died in Delhi.
He was elected from Palghar in Maharashtra to the Lok Sabha.

i. One of the scheme is about extending loan along with interest subsidy while second

Maharashtra to become first state to have Transgender Welfare Board


Maharashtra Minister of state for Social Justice DilipKamble has stated that Maharashtra State
Government will set up a Transgender Welfare Board in a month's time.
i. Board’s primary task will be to look after education, employment, housing, and health schemes
for transgenders and also to protect their Constitutional and human rights.
ii. Maharashtra will thus become the first Indian state to have such a board.
iii. It is to be noted that Maharashtra State Government has made a provision of Rs 5 crore for
welfare of the Transgender community.

Indian Railways to set up Coach Factory in Maharashtra


Railways Minister PiyushGoyal said that, a coach factory will be set up by the Indian
Railways in Latur district, Maharashtra.
i. Decision regarding this was taken at a meeting between PiyushGoyal and Maharashtra Chief
Minister DevendraFadnavis.
ii. This coach factory will produce Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) for suburbantrains and
coaches for metro trains.
iii. Work regarding this project will be carried out with high priority and all approvals will be done
in a fast track pace. The Maharashtra government has provided concessions in land, taxes, etc.
for this project.

Mumbai to have India’s first artificial intelligence centre


Maharashtra State government will be setting up India’s first institute for artificial intelligence

(AI) in Mumbai. It will be unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis during the
Magnetic Maharashtra Summit, beginning on February 18, 2018.
i. Setting up the AI institute will not only play a crucial role in ushering the ‘fourth industrial
revolution’ but will also promote Mumbai as an investment destination in innovations and data
analysis.
ii. Maharashtra State Government has already been experimenting with AI in the health
sector.
iii. Besides, it has also set up a joint working group for AI cooperation with the government of
Canada on February 13, 2018.

Maharashtra to launch cheap sanitary pad scheme, “AsmitaYojana” for rural women
On March 8, 2018 (International Women’s Day), Maharashtra State Government will
launch “AsmitaYojana” aimed at providing subsidised sanitary pads to girl student and women
in rural areas.
i. Under this yojana, girls in ZillaParishad schools will get a sanitary napkin packet at Rs 5 while
rural women can avail it at a subsidised rate of Rs 24 and Rs 29.
ii. “Umed’- the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Mission will be the nodal agency for
implementation of this scheme.
iii. Task of procurement and sale of sanitary pads and counselling the girls and women has been
entrusted to Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) while beneficiary girls will be given “Asmita
Cards”, for availing subsidised sanitary pads.

Maharashtra, Virgin Group Sign Deal for Hyperloop between Mumbai and Pune
On February 18, 2018, Virgin Hyperloop One signed the framework agreement with
Maharashtra State Government to build a hyperloop between Pune and Mumbai.
i. Announcement about the framework agreement was made by Virgin Group Founder
and Virgin Hyperloop One chairman Sir Richard Branson at Magnetic Maharashtra event in the
presence of Prime Minister NarendraModi and Maharashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis.
ii. A hyperloopcomprises a sealed tube/system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of
air resistance or friction conveying people or objects at high speed.
iii. As per a study, a person can travel from Mumbai to Pune (approximate distance - 150
km) in 14-25 minutes through Hybperloop. Besides, it will be an affordable transport solution
as its price would be same as airfare or a cab transport.

Maharashtra govt approves new wildlife sanctuary at Ghodazari


Maharashtra State Government has approved Ghodazari in Chandrapur district as a new
wildlife sanctuary in the state.
i. This decision was taken at the 13th meeting of the Maharashtra State Board for Wildlife, held on
January 31, 2018.

ii. The meeting was chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
iii. The new wildlife sanctuary will include 159 sq km of Brahmapuri forest. This decision
will not only help in conserving the forest but will also benefit nearly 40 villages in the region on
account of consequential increase of tourism related activities.

Maharashtra becomes first state to adopt a comprehensive fintech policy


On February 6, 2018, Maharashtra State cabinet approved Maharashtra FinTech Policy
2018 and thereby became the first State in India to adopt a comprehensive fintech (Financial
Technology) policy for fostering an environment for fintech startups.
i. Vision of this policy is to position Maharashtra among the five best global fintech hubs in the
coming years.
ii. Under this policy, Maharashtra State Government will provide the infrastructure and
financial support to facilitate 300 startups over next three years.
iii. Maharashtra State Government has provided Rs 200 crore for this purpose.

JNPT, Kamarajar and Vizag get good grades in new ‘Port Performance Index’
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Maharashtra), Kamarajar Port (Tamil Nadu) and Visakhapatnam
Port (Andhra Pradesh) have received ‘Good’ score in a new ‘Port Performance Index’
compiled by Dun & Bradstreet.
i. ‘Port Performance Index’ bench-marks performance of 13 Indian ports which handle around
67% of country’s maritime trade.
ii. It has been compiled on basis of a study conducted by Dun & Bradstreet and was handed over
to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu on February 12, 2018.

PM lays foundation stone of Navi Mumbai International Airport


On February 18, 2018, Prime Minister NarendraModi laid foundation stone of Navi Mumbai
International Airport.
i. On completion, Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to ease flight operations
in Mumbai's ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport.
ii. Estimated cost for constructing this airport is Rs 16700 crore. It will have two parallel runways
unlike ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport, which has only one runway.
iii. On February 18, 2018, Prime Minister Modi also dedicated to the nation the fourth container
terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai.

Mumbai 12th richest city globally, New York tops the list: Report by New World Wealth
According to a report by New World Wealth, Mumbai has ranked 12th out of 15 wealthiest
cities globally.New World Wealth is a global market research group, based in Johannesburg,
South Africa. It specializes in ratings, surveys, country reports and wealth statistics.

Mumbai airport becomes world’s busiest single-runway airport


On January 20, 2018, Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport, Mumbai created a new world
record for single-runway operations by handling 980 arrivals and take-offs in 24 hours.
i. By operating 980 flight on January 20, 2018, Mumbai Airport surpassed its own record of 974
flights in 24 hours reported on December 6, 2017.
ii. As per 2017 annual report of CAPA, the Sydney-based education network, Mumbai
airport, which is currently operating at 94% of its maximum passenger handling capacity, will
reach saturation point in 2018.
iii. ChhatrapatiShivaji International airport, Mumbai which has been facing a sever space crunch,
currently handles 45.2 million passengers and on an average, operates around 930 flights per
day.

2018 Kala Ghoda Arts festival organised in Mumbai


Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is an annual multicultural festival held in the Kala Ghoda area of South
Mumbai. Kala Ghoda Arts festival 2018, which is the 20th edition of this festival, began
on February 3, 2018.
i. This year’s theme is ‘Hara Ghoda’ (Green Horse) focusing on sustainability and
environment-friendliness.
ii. Art enthusiasts can witness an amalgamation of contemporary art illustrations, dance, theatre,
music, literature and food during the course of this 9-day art festival.
iii. This festival is organised by Kala Ghoda Association, which was formed in 1998 with an
objective of maintaining and preserving the heritage and art district of South Mumbai.

Sachin Tendulkar made T20 Mumbai League's brand ambassador


On 16th February 2018, Sachin Tendulkar was named the brand ambassador of the
upcoming T20 Mumbai League.
i. The T20 Mumbai League will start on 11th March 2018. It is organised by Probability Sports
India Private Limited as Lead Member and Wizcraft.

ii. It has been approved and sanctioned by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Teams have

Former Maharashtra MLA Hafizbhai Dhature dies at 77


On 14th February 2018,Hafizbhai Dhature, former Maharashtra MLA, passed away due to
heart failure in Miraj, Maharashtra.
i. Hafizbhai Dhature was 77 years old. He is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
ii. He belonged to the Congress party. He represented Miraj in the Maharashtra Assembly for one
term

Maharashtra Current Affairs - March 2018

First Mega Food Park in Maharashtra at Satara inaugurated


On 1st March 2018, M/s Satara Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd., the first Mega Food Park in Maharashtra
&12th Mega Food Park put to function in India,was inaugurated by Harsimrat Kaur Badal,
Minister of Food Processing Industries at Degaon village, Satara district of Maharashtra.
ii. Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that, the Mega Food Park will involve an additional investment of
nearly Rs. 250 crores in 25-30 food processing units in the park. It will bring a turnover of around
Rs. 450-500 crore every year.

Maharashtra government ties up with Wikipedia to promote Marathi


The Maharashtra government has partnered with Wikipedia, to spread the Marathi language
and enhance its online usage.
i. Maharashtra government made this announcement on Marathi language day (27th February
2018). It is aimed to spread the Marathi language across the world.
ii. It will also offer Marathi-speaking people a single platform to interact. It would also help to
reach Maharashtrians who have migrated to the United States.

Highlights of Maharashtra Budget 2018 – 2019


On March 9, 2018, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar presented the state
budget for 2018-19 in legislative assembly while Minister of State for Finance, Deepak Kesarkar
presented the budget in legislative council. This was the fourth budget of the incumbent BJP-led
government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Maharashtra Budget 2018-19 focused on farmers and youth.For fiscal 2018-19, revenue deficit is
estimated at Rs. 15375 crore.

• Rs. 13385 crore budget has been allocated for home department, out of which, Rs. 165
crore will be used for state-wide CCTV surveillance network.

Maharashtra Government bans use of plastic


On March 16, 2018, Maharashtra Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam announced that
state government has decided to ban the use of plastic from March 18, 2018.
i. The ban would apply on production, use, storage, sale, distribution, import and
transportation of plastic.
ii. However, use of plastic for covering medicines, forest and horticulture products, solid waste,
tree saplings has been exempted from the list.
iii. Violation of these norms will be punishable with up to three months of jail term and/or
will attract a penalty of Rs 5000-25000

I&B Minister Smiriti Irani inaugurates FICCI Frame in Mumbai


On March 5, 2018, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Smiriti Irani inaugurated
2018 edition of FICCI Frames in Mumbai.
i.This annual convention on the film and entertainment market is a three-day global convention
covering the entire gamut of Media and Entertainment Industry viz. films, broadcasts (TV &
Radio), Print Media etc.
ii. Nearly 2000 Indian and 800 foreign delegates from Media and Entertainment sector will be
attending this event.

India’s Biggest M&E Services Market, enTTech 2018 inaugurated in Mumbai


India's biggest Media & Entertainment Services Market – enTTech 2018 was inaugurated
in Mumbai on March 7, 2018.
i. enTTech 2018 was organized by Service Export Promotion Council (SEPC) in association
with MEAI (Media & Entertainment Association of India) and TVAGA (Telangana VFX,

NSD to host 8th Theatre Olympics in Mumbai


National School of Drama (NSD) will be hosting the 8th edition of Theatre Olympics in Mumbai
from 24th March, 2018 to 7th April, 2018.
i. Theatre Olympics is the largest international theatre festival and is being held in India for the
first time.
ii. NSD is hosting the 8th edition of Theatre Olympics in Mumbai in collaboration with Directorate
of Cultural Affairs, Maharashtra.
iii. 8th Theatre Olympics opened in Delhi and will be covering 17 Indian cities with over
25000 artistes performing nearly 450 shows.

iv. Theme for the 8th edition of Theatre Olympics is 'Flag of Friendship'.
v. The Jaipur chapter of the Theatre Olympics, 2018, will be organised by NSD under the
aegis of Union ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Ravindra Manch Society and
Rajasthan State Art and Culture department from 18th March, 2018 to 1st April, 2018.
vi. Concept of Theatre Olympics was established in 1993 in Greece, and thereafter it was
held in Japan (1999), followed by Russia (2001), Turkey (2006), South

'World's best airport' title goes to Changi, Mumbai ranked 63rd


Singapore Changi Airport has been rated as world's best airport for the sixth
consecutive year by UK-based consultancy firm Skytrax.
i. In 2017, Changi Airport served 60 million passengers from almost 100 countries across
the world.
ii. Major attractions at Changi airport include a rooftop swimming pool, two 24-hour movie
theatres screening the latest blockbusters for free and a sunflower garden that features several
varieties of sunflowers grown in the airport's on site nursery.
iii. Changi Airport is followed by Incheon International Airport in South Korea at No.2 and
Haneda Airport in Japan at No.3.
iv. Among Indian Airports, ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport, Mumbai ranked 63rd,

Maharashtra women's team wins interstate national tennis championship 2018 in


Chhattisgarh
On 3rd March 2018, the Maharashtra women's team won the interstate national tennis
championship 2018 held in Chhattisgarh which was organised by the Chhattisgarh State
Tennis Association (CSTA) under the guidance of All India Tennis Association (AITA)
Maharashtra’s Mihika Yadav defeated Delhi’s Rishika Sunkara 6-2,7-6,(3) in the finals.

Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Patangrao Kadam passes away
Maharashtra senior Congress leader Patangrao Kadam passed away in Lilavati hospital in Mumbai.
i. Patangrao was a powerful leader in Maharashtra politics and was known as a staunch
Congressman. His son Vishwajeet Kadam is a leader of the Youth Congress wing.

Maharashtra Govt. launches Tribal development centre


On April 10, 2018, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched ‘QUEST’, a centre to
evaluate and quantify special development budget allocations and their impact on tribal
development.
i. Abbreviation ‘QUEST’ stands for Quality Evaluation for Sustainable Transformation.
ii. ’QUEST’ has been initiated by Maharashtra State Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Tribal
Welfare, with an objective to bring greater accountability in spending and management of
dedicated funds allocated for tribal welfare.
iii. Maharashtra has become the first among all Indian states to kick start such initiative.
iv. In context of this news, it is important to note that in Maharashtra State Budget 2018-19, Rs
8233.12 crore has been allocated for development of Scheduled Tribes.

Maharashtra to start free chemotherapy units for cancer patients


Maharashtra State Government has announced that, starting from June 2018, cancer
patients in the state would be provided free chemotherapy treatment at district
hospitals.
i. This facility will be rolled out in phased manner, starting with hospitals in Nagpur, Pune,
Gadchiroli, Amravati, Jalgaon, Nashik, Satara, Wardha, Bhandara and Akola.
ii. In context of this news, it is important to note that according to the National Cancer
Registry Programme, 11 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer every year across India.

51-day long 8th Theatre Olympics, concluded in Mumbai on April 8, 2018. Theatre Olympics is
the largest international theatre festival and was held in India for the first time.
i. 8th edition of Theatre Olympics was inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu at
the Red Fort, Delhi, on February 17, 2018
ii. This event brought together around 25000 artists under the theme “Flag of Friendship”.
iii. 8th Theatre Olympics witnessed 450 shows from more than 30 countries performed
across 17 Indian cities - Agartala, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar,
Chennai, Guwahati, Jaipur, Imphal, Jammu, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna,
Thiruvananthapuram, and Varanasi.

Maharashtra government to hold Startup Week


On 25th April 2018, the Maharashtra government announced the launch of 'Startup Week 2018'
from 25th June to 29th June 2018, with an aim to promote entrepreneurial eco-system.
i. Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship,
Maharashtra, said the startup week will offer new companies a platform to display their innovative
products and services to the Maharashtra state government.
ii. He said that top 100 ventures will be chosen to present their solutions to a panel consisting of
members from government, industry, academia and investors.
iii. 10 startups from each sector will showcase their solutions to the panel. Best three among
them (a total of 24) will be awarded work orders of up to Rs 15 lakh from the Maharashtra State
Innovation Society.
iv. The chosen start-ups will be given access to the government machinery and will receive
mentoring from its institutional partners for 12 months.

Central assistance for irrigation projects in drought prone areas of Maharashtra


On April 27, 2018, Expenditure Finance Committee of Union Finance Ministry accepted the
proposal of Union Ministry of Water Resources to provide Central Assistance for completion of 8
Major/Medium Irrigation projects and 83 Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) projects in
Vidarbha, Marathwada and drought prone areas of rest of Maharashtra.
i. Estimated cost for completion of these projects is Rs. 13651.61 Crore.
ii. All these projects are expected to be completed latest by 2022-23. Post completion,
additional irrigation potential of 3.77 lakh ha will be created in the above stated regions.

Inian Consortium and Saudi Aramco Sign MoU for Ratnagiri Mega Refinery in
Maharashtra
On April 2018, Indian Consortium consisting of IOCL, BPCL and HPCL signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil company of
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to jointly develop and build Ratnagiri Refinery &
Petrochemicals Ltd. (RRPCL), an integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex, in the State
of Maharashtra.
i. This MoU was signed on the sidelines of 16th International Energy
Forum Ministerial Meeting in New Delhi.

ii. The MoU envisages to bring together crude supply, technologies, resources, experience and
expertise of these multiple oil companies with an established commercial presence around the
world.
iii. RRPCL entails investment of Rs. 3 lakh crore and will be world’s largest refining &
petrochemicals project.

Maharashtra signed MoU with British Council


On April 26, 2018, Maharashtra State Government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
with the British Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation.
i. British Council is United Kingdom’s (UK's) international culture and educational arm. It has
completed 70 years in India.
ii. As per the terms of the MoU, British Council would be training 30000 teachers in the
English language in Maharashtra. In the past, British Council already trained more than
100000 teachers, benefitting around five million learners.

Mumbai Football Arena to host Intercontinental Cup


The Mumbai Football Arena, the new hub of Indian football, will play host to the inaugural
edition of the four-nation Intercontinental Cup, which is slated to be held from June 1 to June 10,
2018.
i. The Intercontinental Cup has been planned to be an annual event and will thus have
representation from the CAF( Confederation of African Football) region in the form of South
Africa, New Zealand from the Oceania, and Chinese Taipei from the AFC.
ii. The respective FAs of all the participating teams will be sending their first Teams for the
competition as per the agreements signed with All India Football Federation. Kushal Das,
General Secretary, All India Football Federation mentioned the tourney will help the Blue
Tigers prepare better for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.

Indian animation expert Bhimsain Khurana passed away


On 17th April 2018, Indian animation expert Bhimsain Khurana passed away at a
hospital in Mumbai while undergoing dialysis.
i. Bhimsain Khurana was 82 years old. His first animation short film was “The Climb”. He won the
Silver Hugo Award in the Chicago Film Festival for that movie.
ii. He had directed and produced several animation and ad films. He had won National Award for
his animation short film “Ek Anek Ekta”.
iii. In 1991, he made computer-aided animation serial “Lok Gatha” based on folk tales. He was
also a writer. He had written six books.

Maharashtra govt introduces new scheme to help landless labourers
Maharashtra Government has launched a new scheme to help the landless labourers
from the Scheduled Castes to acquire agricultural land.
i. Now the landless labourers from the Scheduled Castes can purchase acres of rainfed agricultural
land or two acres of irrigated land by paying only 5 % of the cost.
ii. The previous Dadasaheb Gaikwad empowerment of scheduled caste landless labourers scheme
was offering 50 % subsidy. It was not adequate and benefited only 5000 landless labourers from
SCs in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra to get new airport in Sindhudurg


Maharashtra State will get a new airport at ParuleChipi in Sindhudurg district, which is
expected to be functional by September 2018.
i. This airport is being constructed under the aegis of Maharashtra Industrial Development
Corporation (MIDC) by IRB Sindhudurg Airport Pvt. Ltd. on a design-build-finance-operate-
transfer (DBFOT) basis with an estimated cost for constructing this airport is Rs. 520 crore.
iii. Sindhudurg airport will have a 2500-meter runway and in terms of passenger handling
capacity, it will be able to handle 200 departing and 200 passengers arriving during peak
hours.Post completion, this airport will provide better connectivity to the Konkan region of
Maharashtra, parts of Goa, North Karnataka and Western Maharashtra.

Maharashtra became the first state to provide digitally-signed land record receipts
On May 2, 2018, Maharashtra became the first state of India to provide digitally-signed land
record receipts (also known as 7/12 receipts).
i. 7/12 receipt is the most important document which establishes the ownership of the
land. Farmers are required to provide it while applying for loans. Besides, it is also used by the
government during crop surveys and to extend various facilities.
ii. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed that this initiative will enhance ‘ease
of doing business’, would check irregularities and bring in transparency.

Maharashtra government nod to rename North Maharashtra University after poetess

On 3rd May 2018, the Maharashtra government decided to recommend the decalartion of an
ordinance to rename the Jalgaon-based North Maharashtra University after poetess Bahinabai
Chaudhari.
i. This decision was taken by the Maharashtra state cabinet chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis.

ii. The North Maharashtra University is to be renamed as 'Kaviyatri Bahinabai Chaudhari North
Maharashtra University'.

Maharashtra Govt to Give Rs 3-Per-Litre Subsidy to Milk Producers


On May 8, 2018, Maharashtra State Cabinet decided to provide Rs 3 subsidy for every litre
of milk to the co-operative and private producers to manufacture milk powder.
i. It will further help balance the demand-and-supply of milk and producers in Maharashtra will
get Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 27 per litre.
ii. In context of this news, it is important to note that Milk production in Maharashtra is at peak
since past few days. By end of March 2018, the state had surplus 26506 tonnes of milk powder.

Roll out of e-Way Bill system for intra-State movement of goods in the Maharashtra,
Manipur and Union Territories (without legislature)
On 25th May 2018, the e-Way Bill system for intra-State movement of goods was implemented for
Maharashtra, Manipur and Union Territories (without legislature).
i.On 25th May 2018, the e-Way Bill system for intra-State movement of goods was implemented
for:
Maharashtra, Manipur, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli Daman &
Diu and Lakshadweep
ii. The e-Way Bill system for inter-State movement of goods was launched on 1st April 2018.
iii. By 25th May 2018, 27 States / Union Territories will have implemented the e-Way Bill system
for intra-State movement of goods.

Maharashtra becomes first state to sign MoU with GRIHA council for green buildings
On May 11, 2018, Maharashtra State Government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
with the Centre’s Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council to train
state’s Public Works Department (PWD) officials to rate government buildings.
i. Maharashtra has thus become the first Indian state to sign such MoU with GRIHA.
ii. As per the terms of the agreement, GRIHA Council, would train Maharashtra’s PWD's civil and
electrical engineers and architects to rate government buildings on basis of set parameters
iii. Objective behind this rating exercise is to encourage environment friendly/green buildings,
that are designed, constructed, maintained and demolished using environmentally responsible
processes and materials.
iv. GRIHA Council was founded by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi) with
support from Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Tata Motors signs a MoU with the Government of Maharashtra to promote e-mobility
The Tata Motors and Maharashtra Government have signed a MoU to deploy 1,000 Electric
Vehicles across a range of passenger and commercial vehicles in Maharashtra.

i. Tata Power Ltd, a Tata Group company, will help Tata Motors to set up EV Charging Stations in
Maharashtra.
ii. The MoU has come as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.
iii. The five Tigor EVs were provided by Tata Motors to the EESL (Energy Efficiency Services
Limited) as part of its tender for the initiative.
iv. As part of the tender with EESL, Tata Motors has already manufactured 250 cars.

Suresh Prabhu inaugurates 6th US-India Aviation Summit in Mumbai


On May 9, 2018, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 6th US-India
Aviation Summit.
i. This three-day Summit is being jointly organised by Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and US
Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).
ii. The Summit will serve as a platform for Indian civil aviation agencies and aviation industry
representatives, including private sector airlines and airport operators, to identify advanced US
technologies and practices, that can support their expansion and modernization efforts.
iii. India’s civil aviation sector is slated to be third largest market globally by 2020 and,
potentially, the largest by 2030.

Lata Mangeshkar conferred with Swara Mauli award


On 12th May 2018, singer Lata Mangeshkar was presented the Swara Mouli title by spiritual guru
Vidya Narsimha Bharati Swami at her residence in Prabhu Kunj, Mumbai.
i. Lata Mangeshkar is 88 years old. She received the Bharat Ratna award in 2001. She has also
received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
ii. Her sisters Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar and brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar were also
present at the occasion.

Renowned Marathi singer Arun Date dies


On May 6 2018 ,Veteran Marathi singer Arun Date, known for his popular song "Shukratara", has
died in Mumbai.
i. Date, famous for non-film 'bhavgeet' (lyrical poetry) songs, had crooned numbers like
"Shukratara" and "Ya Janmavar", which became very popular among people.He was the first
recipient of the state government's 'Gajananrav Vatave Puraskar'.

Lavani singer Yamunabai Waikar passes away


On 15th May 2018, Lavani singer Yamunabai Waikar died after a short term illness, in
Maharashtra.

i. Yamunabai Waikar was 103 years old. She received Padma Shri award in 2012.

Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Pandurang Phundkar passes away


On 31st May 2018, Maharashtra Agriculture minister Pandurang Fundkar died after suffering
from heart attack, in Somaiya Hospital, Mumbai.
i. Pandurang Phundkar was 67 years old. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in
1989. He represented Akola till 1998.
ii. In 1978, he was elected to Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly from Changaon assembly
seat for the first time.

On 1st May 2018, Gujarat and Maharashtra celebrated their Statehood Day.
i. Maharashtra and Gujarat came into existence as states on 1st May 1960. Hence May 1 is

ii. On 1st May 1960 Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed on linguistic grounds.
