Objectives: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:


1. Define the term plagiarism
2. Recall the purpose for citing sources
3. Name the two types of citation
4. Outline how to do in text citation using paraphrase and direct quotation
5. Complete a class activity that requires in text and end of text citations

Methods: Listening, Questioning, discussion, pair work, guided inquiry


Materials: Cell phone, speaker, question strips textbooks

ENGAGE: Students will listen to a conversation between two robots. They will be required to
answer the following questions based on the conversation:
 What is plagiarism?
 Could anything bad happen to you if you copied someone else’s idea or words and didn’t
give them credit? (Bad grade, kicked out of college, lose your credibility, pay a fine, go
to jail).
 How would you feel if someone stole your idea and didn’t give you credit – what do you
think should happen to them if they do?

EXPLORE: The following questions will be written on strips of paper. Three volunteers will be
asked to select a strip and asked to answer the question on the paper. If they are not sure of the
answer they will be asked to seek help from their classmates.
Questions:
1. Name the two types of citations.
2. Name the two types of in text citations
3. How do you write the end of text citation for a book?

EXPLANATION: Each volunteer will share their answers with the class

EXTENSION/ELABORATION: Additional information will be provided for each question.


Students will identify types of in text citations from display provided.
Students will write the format for end of text citation for a book on the board.
EVALUATION: Students will work in pairs; each pair will be given a text. They will write a
paragraph stating what they have learnt from the text. Also they will include in text and end of
text citations.
