○ You guys can answer that^ HAHAH

Objective Reduction:

Need to be self-conscious >> so do animals suffer?

Could we suffer without pain?

Nope. Suffering is a painful experience. The burning of a hand, losing a loved one, failing a test.
Suffering brings about distress. Basically, suffering sucks. No one likes to suffer, but we all have
to.

But does pain equate to suffering? No. It is more than experiencing pain.
Do animals acknowledge that they are suffering? Or do they just experience pain?

Everyone could experience pain, but do we all suffer?

Suffering is more than just experiencing pain, it’s more of how we take it. If we struggle to
overcome a pain, that’s when we suffer.

It’s a choice. Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.

Summary: Suffering is a feeling of discontent. A struggle to choose to overcome pain/to
gain pleasure.

Subjective Reduction:
“Suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment in finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a
sacrifice”
- suffering can be optional because we a choice as how to we handle the pain
- not necessary to suffer to find meaning, but there is always meaning in suffering >> the
point is for us to find the meaning in suffering
- *Everyone suffers at one point or another, and people who see suffering as pain or
punishment will end up in a cycle of only pain and suffering, but if we find meaning in our
suffering then our suffering is no longer suffering but a sacrifice to find meaning, to find
what our purpose is in life.
- Suffering as a means to an end, telos
- Suffering propels a person to further discover or create their meaning
- Suffering could either be a pit you can’t get out of or a mountain you have to climb (a
challenge)
- Embrace suffering: because man’s will to meaning is stronger than his desire for
pleasure or need to avoid pain.
- Suffering as a challenge, as a journey
- Meaning can be sought out through suffering or love, but suffering as a means to
find meaning will speed up the process of looking for meeting because of the
desperation a person feels in situation
- Suffering is different from pain in that it suffering is dependent on the meaning given to it.
- You can’t appreciate light without darkness
