Data from IOM: Dietary Reference Intakes for thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin
Bg, folate, vitamin B19, pantothenic acid, biotin, and choline. Washington, DC,
1998, National Academies Press.
Al, Adequate Intake; DFEs, dietary folate equivalents; DRI, dietary reference
intake; ND, not determinable; RDA, Recommended Dietary Allowance; UL,
Tolerable Upper Intake Level.
2 The UL for folate applies to synthetic folic acid obtained from supplements,
fortified foods, or a combination of the two.
To minimize the risk of NTDs, it is recommended that women capable of
becoming pregnant consume 400 ug of folic acid per day (from supplements
and/or fortified foods) in addition to normal food folate intake.
