Abstract: The aim of this research is to find out the effect of cooperative learning
on the tenth-grade students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 10 Tangerang. The
research used quasi-experimental nonequivalent design with pre-test and post-test
design. The type of cooperative learning used in this research is Jigsaw technique.
The sample taken are two classes, from each class, the researcher chooses 30
students none randomly. The data is analyzed by using two-tailed test at the level
significance (α) = 0,05. The result showed that the t-test is higher than t-table
(4,96> 2,045). In other words, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the
experimental hypothesis (H1) is accepted. The data proved that cooperative
learning has significant effect on the tenth grade students’ reading
comprehension. The use of cooperative learning type jigsaw helps the students
comprehend the text easily, increasing their motivation, make them more active,
students could more participate in the learning process. As the suggestion, the
cooperative learning type jigsaw technique treatment is recommended to be
applied in teaching reading comprehension and teachers who apply this method
are suggested to use cooperative learning type jigsaw technique along with other
interesting strategies.
