BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

2. Objectives:
SWBAT: Draw their own letter

3. Materials/Equipment: Book: Dear Primo; each student will receive 1 piece of white
paper, access to color pencils and crayons, 1 envelope and 1 sticker for each student

4. Teaching:
Interest Hook: Who knows what a letter is? Has anyone ever sent a letter? Does anyone
have family in another state or country? If so, where?
Today we will read a book about two cousins named Charlie and Carlitos who write
letters to each other from two completely different places and life
styles.
Ok, let’s begin the story. Watch carefully and see how each cousin does the same thing but
differently. I want you to tell me the differences but do not shout out the
answer.
1. Read the book and pause on each page that shows both cousins doing an activity that is
similar but different due to their cultural and environment.
2. Ask 1-2 children to point out and say the differences.
a. Give clues to what is different.

4. There are 22 pages with each cousin telling the other one what they like. Ask the children
what they like based on what the cousins are talking about on the set pages.

At the end of the story, ask the children: Who would you mail a letter to?
Today we are going to draw our letter.
1. First, we will pass out one piece of paper to each student.
2. Next, each student will fold the paper in half vertically and horizontally and create
four squares.
3. Have the colored pencils and crayons disputed throughout the class.
4. Now on the top left we will draw how we get to school.
5. On the top right we will draw our favorite food
6. On the bottom left we will draw our favorite thing to do in school
7. On the bottom right, we will draw our favorite item in our rooms.
8. Now everyone will fold their papers back into fourths and place it inside the
envelopes.
9. Each student will receive one sticker to place on the top right of the front of the
envelop

When you are finished with your envelop we will seal it up and write your name on the back of
the envelope.

5. Closure:
a. Ask the children to name the four things they drew.
b. Ask the children to name who they are sending it to.
c. Have the children state where that person lives.
