Question Assessment:
After giving this assessment, I found that the majority of students remember some of
the figurative language terms from 6th grade, but very few remembered all of them.
Unfortunately, the online test I made for this didn’t allow me to see which terms were the most
missed on the test, but I was able to assess how much time I needed to spend on studying
these terms based on the number of correct answers they got. This class is my higher class, so I
also had to take in to consideration the lower classes scores when trying to decide how much
time to spend on the terms.

Interpretation:
I think the results of this assessment may have been inflated due to the type of
questions they were. Matching allows students to be able to guess, because they have all of the
answers available to them and each one is only used once. This pre-test was also given right
after their short story test, so students may have been burnt out and didn’t try as hard on this
test. There are arguments for both inflated scores and low scores. Also, as I said above, this
class is my higher class, so their scores may not be a good indicator for all of the students. It is
important for students to be familiar with these terms because they will be on their poetry unit
exam as well, so its worthwhile to spend a good amount of time on them.

Question Assessment:
Since the pre-test showed me that very few students remembered all of the terms, I
decided to reteach all of them and give them the same exact assessment at the end. Since I did
use the same online test, it didn’t allow me to see which terms the few students who didn’t get
a 100% got wrong, but I was able to see their improvement from their first test to their second.
The majority of students in all of my classes got a 100% the second time around. These results
showed me that I jogged their memory on the terms they already knew and made sure they
understood the new terms that I taught them.

Interpretation:
I think the results of this assessment showed me that the different ways I taught these
terms helped students remember them well enough to get them all correct on the test. I chose
to reteach all of the terms using different strategies, such as having them write the definitions,
playing Kahoot!, and looking at the literary devices used in pop culture. All of my students
improved on the post-test and all students in this class passed with an 86% or higher.

Reflection:
I was really happy with the results from this assessment. I know that I spent a lot of time
on this unit for what it was, but it was very important for the to understand the figurative
language terms in order to be successful in the poetry unit. I think that taking the time to really
make sure they knew these terms helped lead to their success on the poetry assessment as
well. I also realize the importance of using a variety of instructional techniques to reach all of
my students. Some students may have learned the terms from writing the definitions, while
others did it by seeing them in the context of pop culture. Not everyone learns the same way,
so giving them different ways to learn the same concept really worked well.
