encyclopedia (). London, UK: Routledge.

Ciment and bates (2013) talks about the importance of poverty in many communities, which is a

global issue in the U.S. There is a widespread of poverty, that can affect many colonies

out there. The lower income colonies are unable to compete with the rich colonies and

can be a struggle. They mention many ways how to reduce “income inequality” by

expanding income tax, residential segregation and building assets with your working

family. Doing this can help make humanity a better instead of having difficulties. [Add

Emily Ramshaw (2011) Major Health Problems, Many Linked to Poverty, Plague Residents of

Colonies, The New York Times.

According to Emily Ramshaw (July 9, 2011), she reviewed how major health problems can

lead to poverty. Half a million people live in Texas colonials and more than 350 Texans are at a

health risk. Meaning the residents, who live in colonials have no water, no paved or solid waste

disposals, and contaminated water leading to asthma, rashes and other affections. Many children

suffer at a high risk, there are many cases that deal with the children’s health and how to improve

it by helping out the community. Department of State Health Services promotes volunteers and

speakers to help these colonies. Offering free medical care, free screening, and reliable insurance,

for our children to receive a good nutrition.

"Colonias" along the United States-Mexico Border Journal of Latin American Geography’’

(p.129-148) University of Texas Pres.

According to Delbert and Jean (2009) colonies are “unincorporated” border settlements

in the United States (p.1). There are health risk and poor conditions surrounding many

communities, for example around the Mexico border they have issues with the increase of

poverty growth. They suffer from extreme low income and many residents who deal with this

economy problem relied on unsanitary sources. This health issue was observed by many medical

professionals, lending to people who live around the border with health issues such as hepatitis

and tuberculosis. Both authors research this colony now receives proper health care, education

opportunities and now incorporated with other communities.

Eric Jensen (May 2013) “Faces Of Poverty” vol.70 p.24-30

According to Eric Jensen (2013) claimed that students with lower income households

struggle with engagement. Many students value the importance of hard work and wanting to

succeed with their studies. Eric explains what we can do to help low poverty students by getting

“engaged” with them and “understanding” their situations, because not many teachers understand

the students struggles with their income life. We can show them effort by strengthening our

relations with our students. Showing them, they can succeed no matter where they come from,

helping them improve with their own self growth and mindset.

Perez, Daniel (2017)”Miners Build Rainwater Harvesting System in Colonias” UTEP

According to Daniel Perez (2017) he has researched eight UTEP students from College

of Engineering and Environmental resources management came to help build a rainwater

harvesting system for an elderly couple. The students worked 12 hours to install the system to

collect 2,2000 gallons of water. Daniel found out the community they lived in is called “Las

Pampas” and those residents were able to receive fresh clean water as well. The UTEP team

helped the community and learned basic skills such as working together, being organized,

engineering, and viewing the technical aspects. In the future, they would want to build a similar

system on a larger colonial property.

Weiss and Heather (1991)” Community-Based Family Support and Education Programs:

Something Old or Something New?” [Revised.]

According to Weiss and Heather (1991) both authors promote a youth community

development. They design programs to help encourage opportunities for young children and help

families get their child in school. Having this gain many supports around communities being a

helping hand. There are several family engagements to help the student succeed in their

education and gain a supporting hand.

Sonny Lopez (1985) “Colonia residents strive for better life” The 8.

According to Sonny Lopez (1985) he explains how low poverty colonies strive for a

better life. Many Texas residents struggle to maintain health insurance and always end up falling

into a coverage gap. Sonny explains how community-based organizations help educate them on

their options. Many of the residents are from the U.S Mexico border and have the similar

situations with low income and poor health. This organization helps them find medicate and

educates them on how to overcome poverty, by supporting them along the way.

Amanda Guillen (September 22, 2015) “Pope’s visit to nonprofit to shine light on poverty in

According to Amanda Guillen, poverty in the United states has remained the same for the

past five years. She explains how the Pope visits some of the poorest residents in the cities. The

Pope focuses on to help assist the poor, and many Catholic charities spent more than $4.3 billion

to be aware of the poverty issue. Throughout the search, Amanda realized that they have the

“desire to change the world” and this is a great impact to help the decrease in poverty issues

around the United States.

According to Phillis Jay (2013) colonial poverty caused a distinct investigation leading

to work being required to all in 1632. Including laws that help supply food, household items, and

other essentials from those well off to the needy. Alternatives ended in death and violence which

resulted in social workers to investigate once again. Other areas resulted in child labor and

kidnapping, parents we're labeled as "bad" unable to provide for their families. During the civil

war, women’s and immigration movements we're being brought to the table leading to new

organizations and possibilities involving the workforce and policy.

Both Amando M. Padilla and Rene A. Ruiz explain how many Latinos known as

Mexican Americans receive poor health care, then the rest of the population (p.9). Knowing this

helps us Americans help out our community, since there is a high number of high stress

indicators and many of the Mexican Americans need health coverage. Both authors talk about

how there is different cultural levels, many medical places have discrimination, which is not

good leading many diversity cultures feel discourage (p.11).

James Wiley (2008) “The Banana: Empires, Trade Wars, and Globalization”195-196, University

of Texas Press, Texas, Volume 8

According the James Wiley (2008) In the United States there are many globalization

trade wars leading to many poverties in countries. They imported bananas for money and other

reliable trades but some lead to a disaster. There was a conflict between the European and Latin

Americans, but later fixed to create railways, shipping, and marketing from producing areas

around the United States leading a low increase in poverty.

According to Pual A. Jargowsky and Christopher A. Wheeler (2017) explain how many

immigrants and internal migrants are in worse poverty and harsh conditions. Philadelphia is

known as a poor man country founded in 1682. Poverty remained part of history both as nature

and extent of the problem shifted over time. In the past there was an English Poor law and

administered by churches and private organizations.
