MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY 2

Abstract

I find that the main goal of teaching is to inspire the youth of the future to do better than the

generations of the past while also empowering them with the information required by the

common curriculum. I will make it a standard in my classroom to apply the philosophies of

perennialism and essentialism in an eclectic approach to ensure this outcome.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY 3

Teaching is all about the child. It is understanding that all the faces that you see in front of you

are individuals who have different pasts, different thoughts, and different ways of learning. The

measure of a teacher comes from understanding this fact and being able to develop the minds

behind the faces effectively. In my experience, I find that this is best accomplished with an

eclectic outlook on the philosophies of education. In the words of the BBC British Council, “The

teacher decides what methodology or approach to use depending on the aims of the lesson and

the learners in the group” (Teaching English). Each of the theories offers their own benefits and

downfalls, and when practiced properly I believe that not only a functional but an exceptional

learning environment can be created. In its own way, an eclectic style of teaching is the most

competent method for the modern era.

Perennialism is phenomenal in the idea that the past is still relevant and runs rampant in the

present day. It pushes the students to be analytical and enlightened in their learning, while not

pushing them to accept any of the knowledge in a ‘one size fits all’ fashion. “Thus, cultivation of

the intellect is the highest priority in a worthwhile education” (Oregonstate.edu). I admire the

organization woven through the philosophy and the importance placed on its application. In my

own history classroom, I would incorporate a classroom culture that the individuals within were

a single miniature society. They would be a whole that would discuss learned information

through conversation with one another in activities such as Socratic Seminars that would

promote critical thinking. Learning would partly occur with the class acting as a single entity

based on factual lessons rather than as individuals being lectured by a teacher.

Somewhat related the perennialist approach is that of essentialism. This philosophy dabbles in

the idea that information should be passed to the students in a methodical way that leads into the

next grade level. “Unlike perennialism however, essentialism understands that relevant

information may change according to the progression of the times. Students should be taught

hard work, respect for authority, and discipline.” according to Oregonstate.edu

(Oregonstate.edu). I like this philosophy because it teaches students how to be productive

members of society as well as how to be successful students. I would incorporate this into my

classroom as best I could by installing a reward system that would inspire productivity in the

classroom. In my experience, grades are not enough of a motivation for current students, and I

doubt that that will change in my teaching career. I feel like this will create a feeling of

excitement for the kids when they come to school. This will motivate them to do better in their

studies.

With these two theories, I feel like I will be able to form a successful classroom that develops

the children beyond the applied knowledge. The students will be in my care for a whole school

year during which I shall cultivate a small society of proper young children in the next

generations that will bring about a brighter future. Teachers are a fundamental part of life, and I

will do what I can to ensure that school is a positive experience for them that will encourage

good, lifelong habits. I believe that should be the main priority of a teacher, and I will do

everything in my power to do so. I will teach the students of my time and help them with the

problems they face at that moment so that they can better face what comes their way in the

future.
