Objectives:
Students will be able to understand and recognize different genetic characteristics transferred
Students will develop understanding of DNA by modeling the process of DNA extraction.
State Standards:
Standard H.B.4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the specific mechanisms by
which characteristics or traits are transferred from one generation to the next via genes.
H.B.4A. Conceptual Understanding: Each chromosome consists of a single DNA molecule. Each
gene on the chromosome is a particular segment of DNA. The chemical structure of DNA
provides a mechanism that ensures that information is preserved and transferred to subsequent
generations.
Context:
This lesson, on genetics is important for students to learn so they can have a better understanding
of the body, also it is important because students who find it interesting may want to pursue a
career in the medical field understanding genetic illnesses and be able to cure and prevent them.
Previous to learning about genetics, students must understand the cell and all the different
characteristics, structures and what each one does. The larger unit that would come before this
would be all about the cell. After this lesson on genetics, students will learn about ecosystem
dynamics, students will understand that ecosystems are complex, interactive systems that include
both biological communities and physical components of the environment and this lesson will
help them with this concept.

Introduction (15-20 minutes):
For the intro, as a class we will watch a video on YouTube called, DNA, Chromosomes,
Genes and Traits: An: Into to Heredity. Then I will summarize the video, go over the
basic material that they need to know for this unit. Then I will answer any questions the
students may have. Then I will split them up in groups of 3 or 4 depending on how many
students are in the class. Then I will go over how each station is going to work.
Rationale:
The video that we watched for the intro, titled DNA, Chromosomes, Genes and Traits:
An: Into to Heredity is an important because it summarizes basic things that students
need to know for this lesson. It is a good intro video because they can get a preview of
what they will be learning through the unit and see what they already may know. I know
this video is good quality because the channel that made it does all different science
videos and it is very informational. This video is has a good interactive design, great
quality, and overall motivates you to learn more about the subject.
The second multimedia used in this lesson was an online text book, on cK-12, we used
chapter 3, Genetics and used different subchapters. This is a great online text book
because it includes pictures for visual learners, and videos explaining this for auditory
learners. It is designed great and it very easy to follow along with, everything is also
organized very well and designed well. There is also a learning goal, key words and other
thing that should be known by the end of reading this chapter. This is a well informed and
good text for students to use.
