VI
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
Ethiopian telecommunication started hundred years ago by establishing a telephone link
between capital city and some major provincial cities. Today telecommunication has
extended to interior of the country and uses technologies such as micro-wave, satellite
and fiber optics.

The training program was started on July, 1, 2009 for one day’s morning and afternoon.
The training program was great to know about Nekemt Ethio telecom. The outline of the
training was about new technologies especially respect to ICT technologies. Under this
report I try to list every concept that must be included such as starting from statement of
problem, objectives, scope, significant, methods which I used to gain knowledge, target
goals, also recommendations depending on lesson learned.

1.1 Background of Nekemt Ethio telecom

1.1.1 Historical review of Ethio telecom and its organizational evolution
Telecommunication service was introduced in Ethiopia by emperor Menilik II in 1894
when the construction of the telephone line from Harar to the capital city Addis Ababa
was commenced , then the inter urban was continued to expand satisfactory in all other
direction from the capital to many important centers in the empire where interconnected
by lines ,thus facilitating long distance communication with the assistants or repeaters
between the distant calling parties .available records of the time have shown that by early
1930’s total route distance of about 7000kms interbank network existed and no less than
170towns and villages where connected to the network later ,in 1932 Ethiopia became a
member of international telecommunication union (ITU)immediately before the
Ethiopian invasion of 1935 and radio communication was introduced following the
establish of radio circuit links with Djibouti ,Aden, Cairo and London

The company was placed under the auspices of the ministry of post, telephone and
telegraphs and then recognized as imperial board placed of telecommunication of

1
Ethiopia (IBTE).The former Ethiopian telecommunication authority (ETA) had been
responsible for the execution of both regulatory and operational activities .currently the
regulatory power of authority has transferred to the newly established agency ,Ethiopian
telecommunication agency(ETA)which was established under the ministry of transport
and communication to ensure the implementation

1.1.2 Vision of Nekemt Ethio telecom:

 To be a world-class provider of telecom services.

operate at international level.
 Support community and environmental development.

1.2 main activity of the internship

During my internship, I have achieved the following tasks.

 I was participating and observing how network cable distributed and the topology of
the network

 I am able to perceive significant experience such as different network device with

their usage, cable and trunk management, identifying each node crimping punching
and other important thing like cable test and documentation.

 Understanding and adapting the new technology in the organization Observing how
the configure and troubleshoot a different network problem

2
1.3 Objectives of the report
1.3.1. General objective
The general objective is to configure the hardware and software part of the computer
in telecommunication and to identify the problems.

1.3.2. Specific objective

 To identify and define the whole system
 To adapt the working environment
 To get experience, knowledge and skills
 To develop ability to work in office
 To make the networking area standardized.
 To maintain defective computer of the internship

1.4 Significance of the internship.

The project has many advantageous for the organization employee and also for us
some of are:

For Organization and employee

 internet connection to be fast

 the organization properly use number of network installation device like
cable, switch, router
 it is simple to troubleshoot the error when the error occurred or fix the
error
 it is also simple to identify where the error occur
 It attractive for the organization and employee
 It is simple to add and remove network device from different room
without affect other room
 And For us
 We get knowledge during design a network installation
 We share experience to from employee

3
 For the future we can design network easily

4
CHAPTER TWO
INTERNSHIP DISCUSSION
During the process of data collection, we have interviewed our supervisor in the
organization about Ethio telecom. He told how they are working in the Ethio
telecom. Also he showed us how the system works,

During our two months stay, we tried to observe different problems in the Ethio
telecom and in that organization.

In the Ethio telecom

There is a shortage of computer skilled man power, which means only one or two
persons is responsible for that task. Managing the overall data of the city town
employees to a single person is very difficult.

Lack of coordination on work is the other problem of the organization.

Coordination of employees at the working environment is very important to
achieve the goal of the organization.

2.1 Were the objective achieved?

The main objective of this internship is to practice the theoretical knowledge
learned in the class room. The objective were achieved that means I know how to
configure, install and troubleshoot network.

2.2 What skill were learned during the internship?

During this internship I gained different skills some of this are:-

Listening skills: These skills enable me to recognize what another person is

saying. They comprise new ways of responding so that the other person feels his
troubles and feelings have been understood. And I respond immediate thing to the
speaker man.

Speaking skill: in this skill I can speak to every person for my or his want to fill.

5
Conflict-resolution skills: These skills enable me to resolve or manage conflicts
effectively. Especial in my work section during project execution the difference of
idea is obvious so that to overcome such idea overlap as a team a used to different
mechanism of conflict resolution. For the future I will enter into different
organization in that organization different employee is there may be occur conflict
so I can resolve the problem as I learn during two month internship.

Asking skill: I ask questions so I am sure of the objectives of the team.

Communication skill: I have improved formal communication skill, with the

help of my associates; I have found many options to develop these skills

2.3 Challenges I experienced during internship

The rain is very difficult to go to the organization.

It is difficult to communicate with my internship supervisor because for first time

I am new to him so I am afraid of him.

Internship place and my home are far in this case difficult to arrive on time.

6
CHAPTER THREE
Methodology of my internship
I used some methodologies in order to know about networking and its
configuration. Some of the methods which are used are:

Observation: I observed every action that performed everyday activities to

understand any processes to configure network.

Interview: To obtain the necessary information, I interviewed Nekemt Ethio

telecom network administrator. He is project leader of windows server installation
and Network problem solver Mr. Wasihun.

3.1 Tools and materials

3.1.1 Hard ware tools
I used the following devices during the two months internship: -

 Computers
 Cables
 Crimper
 RJ45 cables
 Switch: - A switch is used to network multiple computers together.
Switches made for the consumer market are typically small, flat boxes
with 4 to 8 Ethernet ports. These ports can connect to computers, cable or
DSL modems, and other switches. High-end switches can have more than
50 ports and often are rack mounted
 Router:-are small electronic devices that join multiple computer networks
together via either wired or wireless connections.
 Server: - A server is a computer program that provides services to other
computer programs (and their users) in the same or other computers. The
computer that a server program runs in is also frequently referred to as a
server. That machine may be a server or used for other purposes as well.

7
3.1.2 Software tools
 Microsoft office
 CISCO packet Tracer: its cross-platform visual simulation tool designed
by Cisco Systems that allows users to create network topologies and
imitate modern computer networks
 MS VISIO: to design the network

8
CHAPTER FOUR
Proposed System Design
4.1 Introduction
System Design is the process of defining the architecture, components, modules,
interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. It is
intermediate language between requirements and code and also it is the first step
in moving from problem domain to solution domain proceeding from abstract to
more concrete representations.

4.2 Design Goal

Expansibility:-new capability to added to the network architecture without major
change to the underline architecture

Modularity: - The components could be then design and tested in isolation before
being integrated to form a desired architecture. This allows division of work in
software development project.

Maintainability:-A measure of how easily bug fixes or functional modifications

can be accomplished.

Reusability:-The ability to use some or all of the aspects of the preexisting

software in other projects.

Security:-The architecture is able to with stand and resist hostile acts and
influences.

Usability:-The architecture must be usable for its target user/audience. Default

values for the parameters must be chosen so that they are a good choice for the
majority of the users.

CHAPTER FIVE
Conclusion and recommendation
5.1 Conclusion
During the whole, our stay in Ethio telecom for Internship program it helped us to have
experience on the work, to know the society and environment how it looks like on the
work place. It develops our theoretical and practical knowledge and it helps us to prepare
ourselves to face office work challenges, came up with the practical world and to decide
our way of living after graduation. So, this Internship program is provides to be a bridge
between the student life and professional life.

This program played an important role in various types of activities. The activities that
we had 1been undertaking during this past months on the office enhanced our knowledge
in project management and Ethio telecom work. We were also able to apply our
theoretical knowledge of communication engineering on the Service of Ethio telecom.

In these times, we had been able to differentiate theoretical aspects, methodologies and
how to interpret network designs. So, this all things that we were working with the
professional workers in the office are what we got from this program. And the benefit we
got here was it answer our question “how it looks like working with the professional
workers?” So, we gained knowledge, skills and experience from different sections of the
company workers. Besides of technical, practical and theoretical knowledge, we gained
experiences in real life work

In general, we developed good confidence that will make us familiar to the work place
after graduation. And also the internship experience has helped us to:

Upgrade our theoretical knowledge and visualizations. Upgrading our ability to be

creative, confident and take risks in our future professional career.

Generally, this internship program played a wonderful role in preparing us as students,

with the practical knowledge of communication engineering. And it helped us to develop
self-confidence and introduced us to the world of networking.
10
CHAPTER SIX
EVALUATION AND CRITIQUE
6.1 career goals evaluation
Before this internship my career goal is working in maintenance field but after
this internship I change my career goal to work in networking field.

This two month internship fit my career goal because after graduation I will need
work on different organization in that organization may have use networking,
install\configure and other different software or if have no network access so now
I am practice on it and I will work it.

And also, this internship also fit my career goal for the future I will join different
organization so I can easily work together will, I improving punctuality, I get
work Respect

Yes, this two month internship change my career goal because in our campus, I
learn only theoretical part on networking and other three remaining department so
during the internship I upgraded the theoretical and practical part of networking.

6.2 self-evaluation
During this internship, I evaluate myself act different activity as I learn the
theoretical part of the network even if the duration time for learning networking is
very further but I can have memorized it and practice for the theoretical part
generally I act different activity during two-month internship some of are listed
below: -

 I am punctual.
 I progress work respect.
 I understand intermediate supervisor easily during practice time.
 I am help other when they ask me.

11
6.3 value of the internship
The value of this internship is good to me even if it is not comfort at the
beginning because many obstacle is occurred to me example weather condition
place of organization, computer not work properly, volunteer of the agency,
volunteer of immediate supervisor and other but I solve this and other problem I
am upgraded my knowledge.

Generally the two month internship is good because I get different knowledge on
networking for install and configure networks and also I upgraded my knowledge.

6.4 Recommendation
Generally, during this program we have seen different case. Thus for such occasions we
are intended to recommend the following:

For the university:

 It is better to cross check those interns periodically

 It is advisable to give those interns to find out problem
which is important for further deal rather than preparing
report
 There must be an agreement between the universities and
internship companies to allocate students in technical work
rather than theoretical
 The report must be presented after semester break as other
universities.

For the company:

 It has to give a task (that is participating both in field and office works as
required) for those interns to execute independently as it enhances their
responsibility
 Strictly follow up the performance and punctuality of interns in their task
execution.

12
 As much as possible it is better to pay allowance so as to help and motive
them for successful practice.

For the student:

 They have to be interactive.

 Does their task according to the work ethics of the company.
 He or she has to be eager to know more both practically and theoretically.
