The passage is about the purposes of “Great Houses” which were ancients constructions created by
Chaco Canyon settlers in the twelfth century in the American Southwest. It gives some hypothesis
of what that buildings were used for. As the listening refuses those hypothesis by giving some
evidence.
First the passage states the Great Houses were only residential places, where hundreds of families
used to live in, but in the post cast, the speaker denies that since inside the building there are no
Another hypothesis the passage gives is the Great houses served as store places of maize. However,
in the listening, they suggest that this hypothesis is false because there are not maize containers.
Even, there are not archeological rest of them. There have only been found maize spilled around
the floor.
Finally the passage states the great houses were used for ceremonial purposes. Considering the
large amounts of pots founded near a Great House. Maybe these pots were used for religious
ceremonies. On the other hand, the listening rejects that because in that place there only have been
found deposits of building trash materials such as sand, stones, even construction tools.
In conclusion it remains been a mystery what the Great Houses were used for.
