ORIGINAL GROUND LEVEL

After clearance and compaction of construction site Natural

ground level will convert in OGL ( Original Ground Level ). Then Soil
sample shall be taken and tested for OGL (as mentioned in Natural
ground level )

TEST REQUIRED

The following tests on OGL samples shall be carried out:

a) Sand Content [IS:2720 (Part-4 )]

b) Plasticity Test [IS:2720 (Part-5)]

c) Density Test [IS:2720 (Part-8)]

d) Deleterious Content Test [IS:2720 (Part-27)]

e) Moisture Content Test [IS:2720 (Part-2)]

f) California Bearing Ratio Test [IS:2720 (Part-16)]

Field Dry Density Test or Compaction

Test
Field dry density shall be tested on each layer by taking at least one set
of Ten Density for each 3000 sq.m of the Compacted area.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR COMPACTION TEST

1. The determination of density shall be in accordance with IS 2720

part 28.
2. Test location shall be chosen only through random sampling
techniques.
3. If Non-destructive tests are carried out, the number of tests shall
be doubled.
4. If considerable variations are observed between individual
density results, the minimum number of tests in one set of
measurement shall be increased.

The topsoil, removed and conserved earlier shall be spread over the
fill slopes as per directions of the engineer to facilitate the growth of
vegetation. The depth of the topsoil shall be sufficient to sustain plant
growth, the usual thickness being from 75 mm to 150 mm.

Test shall be done same as Embankment and Subgrade. If test results

of Original ground level soil meet with Subgrade requirement or We
can say if original ground level soil (cut formation) is suitable for
Embankment or Subgrade then -

The cut formation, which serves as an Embankment or sub-

grade, shall be prepared to receive the sub-base/ base course as
directed by the Engineer.

Where the material in the Embankment or Subgrade has a density

less than 16.0 kg/ cum (1.60 N/mm2) or 17.5 kg /cum (1.75 N/mm2),
the same shall be loosened to a depth of 500 mm and compacted in
layers. Adding fresh material, if any required, to maintain the
formation level as shown in the drawings.

Any unsuitable material encountered in the subgrade level shall be

removed as directed by the Engineer, replaced with suitable material
and compacted.

In case where the difference between the sub-grade level (top of the
sub-grade on which pavement rests) and ground level is less than 0.5
m and the ground does not have 97 percent relative compaction for
Embankment 95 percent relative compaction with respect to the dry
density (tested in lab), the ground shall be loosened up to a level 0.5
m below the sub-grade level, watered and compacted in layers to
achieve dry density not less than 97 percent relative compaction or
95 percent for Embankment.
