Negative Effect of Global Warming on the

Environment
When it comes to global warming, everybody wants to change the world but
nobody wants to change themselves. The science is clear, global warming is
happening and humans are the primary cause. The term global warming or
climate change as some would say is defined as the current increase in
temperature of the Earth's surface (both land and water) as well as its
atmosphere according to the article whatsyourimpact.org. As we overload our
atmosphere with different gases produced by human activities such as
deforestation or the burning of fossil fuel, the concentration of greenhouse
gases mainly carbon dioxide increases. Studies have shown that these gases
trap heat and act like blanket to warm the planet. This poses a problem
because more greenhouse gases are being added to the atmosphere at a faster
rate than any natural process can remove them. As such it forms the basis of
my topic, the negative effects of global warming on environment which stems
from theme Environment.
To begin with global warming causes ice to melt. Ice melting is one of the most
primary manifestations of global warming towards the environment. This is
because as temperatures get warmer the ice melts faster than they can
accumulate new snow. Evidence shows that continents like North America,
Europe and Asia have all seen a trend toward less snow cover between 1960
and 2015, according to 2016 research published by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA is an agency formed on December 2, 1970 by
former United State of America Richard Nixon to protect human health and the
environment from climate change. According to Jason Briner a geology
professor who uses glacial and lacustrine records to study global warming in
the Arctic at the University of Buffalo Collage, there is now 10 percent less
permafrost, or permanently frozen ground, in the Northern Hemisphere than
there was in the early 1900s. He also stated that the thawing of permafrost can
cause landslides and other sudden land collapses which could release long-
buried microbes, as in a 2016 case when a cache of buried reindeer carcasses
thawed and caused an outbreak of anthrax. In additionally to less permafrost,
one of the most dramatic effects of global warming is the reduction in Arctic
sea ice. Sea ice hit record-low extents in both the fall and winter of 2015 and
2016, meaning that at the time when the ice is supposed to be at its peak, it
was lagging. The melt means there is less thick sea ice that persists for multiple
years. A similar trend is seen in glacial areas worldwide. This melting of ice now
causes sea levels to rise.
Secondly the rising of sea levels is another effect of global warming. This can
be said because as water gets warmer, it takes up more space. Each drop of
water only expands by a little bit, but when you multiply this expansion over
the entire depth of the ocean, it all adds up and causes sea level to rise. Sea
level is also rising because polar ice are melting in the Artic and Antarctic
regions, coupled with the melting ice sheets and glaciers across Greenland,
North America, South America, Europe and Asia which are adding more water
to the oceans. In general, as ice melts, sea levels rise. In 2014, an agency
known as the World Meteorological Organization that adapt to a change
climate and manage risks associated with climate variability and extremes
reported that sea-level rise accelerated 0.12 inches per year on average
worldwide. They also stated that this around double the average annual rise of
0.07 inches in the 20th century. The Environmental Protection Agency also
reported that global sea levels have risen about 8 inches since 1870, and the
rate of increase is expected to accelerate in the coming years. The EPA further
stated that is greenhouse gas emissions remain unchecked, global sea levels
could rise by as much as 3 feet (0.9 meters) by 2100. That estimate is an
increase from the estimated 0.9 to 2.7 feet (0.3 to 0.8 meters) that was
predicted in the for future sea-level rise. Evidence now shows that if current
trends continue, many coastal areas, where roughly half of the Earth's human
population lives, will be inundated because they may become increasingly
vulnerable to flooding. Also there will be destructive erosion, aquifer and
agricultural soil contamination, and lost habitat for fish, birds, and plants since
most of the sea water is reaching further in land.
Finding information relative to the specifics of my research proved most
challenging. This was because the negative effect of global warming on the
environment is a topic which is widely researched by many scientist over the
years so most sites share the same information but only in different words.
Also organizing and summarizing the information was very challenging since
global warming is a topic which carriers a lot of research behind.
To conclude, global warming is the current increase in temperature of the
Earth's surface (both land and water) as well as its atmosphere.
