Backup Proxy Server
Assigning, configuring and scaling
Veeam Backup Proxy
What is it in charge of?
• Handling jobs on its own.
• Responsible for the whole backup traffic.
• Releases the load of Veeam backup server.
Veeam Backup Proxy
In what manner?
• Acts like a source-side data mover.
• Reads data of VM Snapshot on DSS.
• Compresses and deduplicates data.
• Sends data to the backup copy storage or to another Backup Proxy
Veeam Backup Proxy
Requirements?
• A physical or a virtual machine with Windows Server
• Balancing load among Proxy servers
• Can be installed both on a local and on a remote site
Veeam Backup Proxy
Hardware
• CPU: x86 with 2 cores (vCPUs)+ 1 core (vCPU) for every extra concurrent task.
• Memory: 2 GB RAM + 200 MB for every extra concurrent task.
• Disk Space: 300 MB.
• Network: 1 Gbps or faster for an on-site backup and replication, and 1 Mbps
or faster for an off-site one.
Veeam Backup Proxy
OS
Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are supported:
• Microsoft Windows Server 2016
• Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
• Microsoft Windows Server 2012
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2
• Microsoft Windows 10
• Microsoft Windows 8.x
• Microsoft Windows 7 SP1
• Microsoft Windows Vista SP2.

Requirements
• Microsoft Windows Server 2016 with Hyper-V role enabled
• Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role enabled
• Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V role enabled
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V role enabled
Both host and off-host backup proxy should have the same versions of Microsoft
Hyper-V.
Off-host backup with CSV (SAN): one requires a VSS hardware provider that
supports transportable shadow copies.

!Not required for off-host backup with SMB shared storage.

Encryption
• 2 recovery keys are used, one for users
and one to be stored in Enterprise

forgets his key.
• A symmetric AES 256-bit is used. It
adds around 5% load to recovery
and backup.
