ACUPUNCTURE
INTRODUCTION
▪ Originated from an ancient Chinese medicine-based treatment

▪ Treats conditions or symptoms by inserting small needles into affected areas

▪ Frequently used in companion animals, but effective in every breed/species of animal

▪ Treats:
1. Anxiety & Depression
2. Chronic pains
3. Hypertension
4. Osteoarthritis
5. Disorders of reproductive/musculoskeletal/dermatologic/pulmonary/
gastrointestinal disorders
▪ Using needles to pinpoint specific areas on the
skin and the underlying structures
▪ Chronic issues require weekly visits (30-90 mins)
for 6-8 weeks, less severe conditions/acute
conditions require less visits.
▪ Stimulates immune system: injures puncture site,
signaling the body to respond to that area
▪ Promotes circulation, wound healing, pain
modulation
▪ Every acupuncture point has specific actions
when they are stimulated
▪ Synergistic reactions optimized when needle
points combined
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Risks

▪ Misapplication of needles (eye injuries, pneumothorax, broken needles, infectious
arthritis, etc)

▪ Acupuncture: 50% see change but symptoms are still present, 25% feel completely
cured, and the other 25%'s response is little to none.
▪ Electroacupuncture: 79% success rate
Cost
▪ Initial Consult: around $110
▪ Subsequent visits (30 mins): $70
▪ *depends on veterinarian, location, duration, treatment necessary, etc.
